The day before the final rest day saw Veselin Topalov gain an edge in the race for the tournament. Whilst he won his closest rival Anand was held. They meet on Saturday with Topalov having the white pieces.

Two games finished after two hours play. Boris Gelfand against Sergey Karjakin drew after Gelfand repeated after 22 moves of an open Catalan. Sergey Tiviakov against Vassily Ivanchuk saw Tiviakov play his Worrell Attack again and pieces were traded at regular intervals until a very drawish knight and pawn ending was reached. They played to move 40 before repeating.

Next to finish was Shakhriyar Mamedyarov against Viswanathan Anand. A draw looked like the limit of Mamedyarov's ambitions and Anand didn't get any chances. Anand commented on his opponents play that he chose a "Very solid line, not much you can do"

Then the game of the day. Veselin Topalov found a new idea in a variation of the Queen's Indian seen in Kramnik - Leko 2004. Black held in that game, here he uncorked an exchange sacrifice on move 18 which put black in a lot of trouble. Aronian didn't find 22.Bxc5 which was Topalov's main line. Topalov's passed pawns became a huge factor allowing him to part with a second exchange. He then wrapped things up efficiently after first time control.

Sokolov - Adams Round 10. Photo © Mark Crowther

Ivan Sokolov made little progress against Michael Adams Queen's Indian and may have even been slightly worse. The game simplified to a drawn rook and pawn ending.

Etienne Bacrot got a huge advantage out of a side line of the Sicilain Kan against Gata Kamsky. Kamsky was hugely behind in development and soon paid with material. Bacrot used a lot of time getting the advantage and perhaps wasn't the most accurate however he maintained enough to win after the first time control.

The day ended badly for Leko who lost to van Wely in the final game to finish. Photo © Mark Crowther.

Loek Van Wely held the advantage out of the opening due to his two bishops against Peter Leko. He probably didn't find the best and Leko should have been able to find his way to the draw, especially after rooks came off, however he relaxed and played the very poor 30. ..g6 after which he was lost.
