Topalov - Anand. A brief draw. Photo © Mark Crowther.

Had Anand had white instead of Topalov then perhaps more might have been expected of their round 12 clash. As it was Topalov came to fight but only to the extent that it didn't jeopardise his position. As soon as Anand found an important innovation from Topalov - Sokolov in round 7 it was clear that Topalov was steering for a draw which was duly agreed on move 23.

Ivan Sokolov against Etienne Bacrot was an interesting struggle in a Slav. Both sides had to be careful in the ensuing tactics but they also reduced the position to material sterility.

Tiviakov - Leko was a short draw. Photo © Mark Crowther.

Sergei Tiviakov took Peter Leko down a side-line of the Giuocco Piano. Leko pretty much equalised and hoped to provoke a more complex struggle. Tiviakov played with care and the game was agreed drawn on move 23.

Sergey Karjakin said he was not happy with his position on the white side of the Ruy Lopez Anti-Marshall but Aronian didn't find anything and the game was agreed drawn in 27 moves.

Gata Kamsky defeated Mamedyarov with quite embarrassing ease with the black pieces. Once Kamsky had found the nice 11. ...Ne8 Mamedyarov seemed to lose the thread and played planlessly for the rest of the game. Kamsky quietly strengthened his position and his win was only accelerated by a desperate sacrifice of a piece towards the end.

Van Wely pressed hard against Michael Adams. Photo © Mark Crowther.

Loek Van Wely grabbed a pawn in a novelty in a known position of the Queen's Indian against Michael Adams. Adams had plenty of compensation in the shape of his two bishops but then drifted possibly with f5 allowing his king to be cut off and also when he didn't eliminate white's final queenside pawn. Eventually van Wely had a knight and three pawns against Adams bishop and two and he seemed to have enough resources to hold.

Gelfand - Ivanchuk Round 12. Photo © Mark Crowther.

Boris Gelfand had a lucky escape against Vassily Ivanchuk. Straight out of the opening he was worse which quickly turned out to be a piece. He fought back but allowed a straight win on move 40. Ivanchuk missed this chance and the game eventually ended in a draw.

Zolton Almasi becomes the 3rd leader in three days in the B Group after defeating Alexander Motylev the previous leader who in turn defeated Magnus Carlsen the day before. With only a half point lead from these two Almasi is by no means home and dry going into the last round.
