Veselin Topalov assumed the sole lead of the Wijk aan Zee A tournament after 7 rounds. Topalov defeated Ivan Sokolov easily enough. Topalov got a very good position a pawn up out of the opening, Sokolov tried to complicate with sacrifices, Topalov refuted.

20...Nxe5? Black's position is already bad but this attempt at complications is easily refuted by Topalov. [20...fxe5 21.hxg4 exd4 22.Nxd4] 21.fxe5 [21.Rg1] 21...fxe5 22.Rxf8+ Qxf8 23.Nf3 e4 24.Ne5 Bxh3? Getting it over with. Meanwhile round 6 joint leader Viswanathan Anand couldn't make progress in an Anti-Marshall. His TN in will probably not find many supporters as Michael Adams at least equalised and the game was halved in 23.

15 year old Sergey Karjakin moved up to a share of second place after a positional win against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov where the latter resigned in a miserable position with a bad bishop against Karjakin's great knight but the position was one which he probably have tried a little longer to save.

A bit early but this position is pretty depressing for black. 1-0

When Gata Kamsky reviews the result of this event he will probably come to two conclusions, he can play at this level again, but not without serious hard work on his openings. Another opening distaster was followed by tough defending which proved futile, Leko finished off with a nice combination.

Loek van Wely took advantage of carelessness by Levon Aronian to win two pieces for a rook by move 26. It took a lot of care to win the game but he did so on move 86 without letting go of his advantage.

Vassily Ivanchuk and Etienne Bacrot followed a Cambridge Springs Variation that previously led to a short draw between them in Saint Vincent last year. Ivanchuk varied first and a complex battled ensued where dynamic balance was kept throughout until a draw was agreed on move 43.

Boris Gelfand drew with Sergei Tiviakov in 30 moves. Gelfand didn't get anything from the Queen's Indian and so forced a repetition.

Magnus Carlsen is now a point clear in the B Group after beating Giovanni Vescovi in smooth if unspectacular style.
