A Ballad For Halloween We had originally intended to do this tonight, roaming around the neighborhood and generally acting (or actually being) completely drunk, but due to the glorious nature of our government's lovely regulations on registering automobiles, we're cur...

8V DC power supply? I find myself in need of a stable source of 8V DC power. Unfortunately I don't know off the top of my head how much current I'll end up drawing off the thing, but to be safe I'm going to want something that can give me at least 2 amps. Anyone have...

A feature that compilers really should have I was thinking earlier today about how annoying it is that compilers (most notably, both Visual C++ and GCC) seem to be very stupid and brute-force in the way they handle preprocessor changes. Specifically, I'm constantly running into some situation...

Need me some video capture hardware Right, here's the deal. It has come time for my annual fixation with Making A Household Appliance The Geeky Way. My target this time around: PVR (a Tivo clone, for those of you who are initialism-challenged). For those with painfully short attenti...

Hurray! More pronunciation questions I was discussing some code with a cow-orker today and came across a class of mine that employs std::deque. This created a rather interesting problem: I have no idea how to say "deque." I've never (consciously) heard it said aloud, and I always gloss...

Opinion: fully bracing branching instructions in C-style languages Lately I've been seeing a lot of discussion on various sites, blogs, wikis, and what have you about fully bracing all braching instructions (with references to C-style languages that have bracing, or analogous optional-bracing schemes in ot...

Sweeeet... now what the hell do I do with it? I recently acquired a Sharp 4LU4EB LCD panel. It's basically as cool as all get out and was definitely worth the pittance I paid for it. Now, the question is, what do I do with it? I have no idea what to use it for (and, naturally, my geekness demand...

The Cloaked BSOD of Mystery So here I was (about a week ago now), minding my own business, when suddenly my Windows 2003 system falls apart with a BSOD. My first impulse was bad drivers, overheating hardware, or something normal and not very scary like that. The stop error code...

Screw Nvidia. I am become a hardcore ATI fan. At least, I am become a hardcore hater of Nvidia. Their software sucks, hands down. I cannot convince the 45.23 drivers to let me use horizontal spanning mode on my dual monitors, which means I can’t play...

OMFG I Killed It! I’ve finally burned the tiny little fan on my video card into the ground. It is dead. Gone. Finished. Broken. Lifeless... er, right. I have a PNY GeForce 4 Ti4800 SE (although for some odd reason PNY insists that it is a Ti4600... which...

Unit Tests as used in the industry. See, that sounds a lot more sensible to me. The "unit testing" I've run across in the past has come across as "have an automated test for every possible combination of everything" which is just pointless. In reality, I do the kind of testing you d...

What has annoyed you the most this year? (long post!) My annoyance of choice would have to be cultural preconceptions about time. Specifically, I'm very annoyed on a daily basis by this stupid notion that the only valid time to do things is while some random ball of gaseous fusion is visible i...

The taste of alcohol... Getting buzzed really isn't worth the effort, IMHO. If you really want to get tanked quick, get some cheap spirits and do shots with chasers of something you like to mask the alcohol. Four or five shots should get you well buzzed if you're new to dri...

Excersises Buy one of these. Buy it now. They're incredibly effective at working the grip and arms, and by holding the gyro in different ways and at different angles, you can work different muscles. Bloody addictive little things, and the best part is they'r...

Unit Tests as used in the industry. That sounds like regression testing to me, which is a totally different ball game and requires completely different techniques for organizing and performing the tests; regression testing is also absolutely vital for maintenance work. I guess the term...

Battle of the monkeys Quote:Original post by benryves C, but why no option D, the IBM Gorilla? I too must register my distress at the lack of The Gorilla. Clearly, the highly intelligent, physics-savvy Gorilla wielding explosive bananas is far more deadly than any of...

industry info plz 1. Twenty five cents, and eleven cents, respectively. I'll leave you to determine which currency I'm using. 2. Sixty-four percent of the GNP. I'll let you figure out which country's GNP I used for that calculation. 3. It's likely that at least...

Starting...(Need Help...Alot) 1. I'd start with C#, personally. You might progress to C++ later, but there's better tools to start out with. Another good place to start is Python, and the PyGame toolkit for it. Starting with a low-level language like C++ is likely to get you burn...
