Programming for.. umm.. DVD players I was wondering, is it possible (for the average individual) to write software for at least some of the portable DVD players? Do they support flashing their bios (perhaps by putting it on a CD/DVD) or the only way to update their firmware i...

FFS, I can't select a new theme The colors of this new theme are, well, less than fortunate (for me, that is). They burn my eyes. So I went to my control panel to change them to the old version, but apparently the theme control thing doesn't work? Did anyone else experience this p...

New forum: Hardware/Software So far, all the posts related to hardware and software usually end up in the Lounge. I think that it would be intereting to have a forum dedicated to stuff like: "What laptop should I buy?", "My computer is crashing", and so on.

Using the IR on PDAs I am looking for a programming language and IDE (preferably C, but Basic would be ok too) which can be used to access I/O the IR interface on either Palm or PocketPC platforms. Preferably, that IDE (or even a compiler is ok) should be free and...

My futuristic idea about colonizing Mars and Venus As you know, Nasa is planning to send humans on Mars in 2050 or so. Mars suffers from not enough atmosphere. If it had a denser atmosphere (especially greenhouse gases such as methane and CO2) the temperature there would be warmer, and the pres...

I am such a 1337 electronist engineer (well, sort of) I got an Ipaq RX3700 with for 76 USD on Ebay (had a broken LCD, so the right side of the screen was dead). This is a very good PDA, has bluetooth, wifi, and a built in 1.2 MP camera. The first problem with it was that the internal backup bat...

PayPal withdrawal limit? WTF? PayPal just added a withdrawal limit of 500 USD/month? WTF, I can't withdraw more than 500 USD month from my fucking account? Did anyone notice that?

Linux 1, WinXP 0 (need help with formating a hdd) I bought a media player off Ebay (a small box where you put a laptop HDD) and it wants the HDD formated as Fat32. This device can be connected to a computer via USB. The HDD I am using is 60 GB, and it was formated as NTFS. So I tried to format is...

Your printer working for the government. http://www.tgdaily.com/2005/10/19/eff-decodes-printertrackingdots/ Quote: The next time you use the office printer, you may be printing up a lot more than sales figures or quarterly reports. Many color laser printers are secretly embedding tracki...

Servers The current server is a dual p3 1.1 GHZ (I think), 1GB RAM and a small HDD (20 GB I think). That server is not ours, we are just using it. The one I am planning to get will be most likely from Dell and will be some AMD 64, 1GB RAM and a 2 driv...

Servers We are looking to buy a new server for Eternal Lands, and I am looking at the 1.5K-2K range (but I want next on site support which is kind of expensive.) Such a machine (in that price range) should hold about 4K players or even more.

Pyrogon Postmortem I read that article last year, was very interesting, but nothing really new. My first game development job was for an indie romanian company, and even though I left them 6 months after, I did follow their progress. And they ended up now just doing f...

Programming for.. umm.. DVD players Well, they have to have some general purpose CPU for stuff like menus. What can you do with one, if you could get it to work? Well, one thing could be some games (2d games). Another thing would be perhaps some unidirectional IR interface s...

Programming for.. umm.. DVD players I know that there are some ways to do it, but I am not that crazy to do it all by myself :) I was hoping there were some (3rd party) SDKs (possibly even a Linux version) for some portable DVD player. I mean, we have Linux on an Ipod and o...

Programming for.. umm.. DVD players The DVD link for that game doesn't work, but games like that are very limited, they only allow to 'program' in some sort of DVD menu script thing. I would like ASM level programming :)

Writing Open Source games for life If your main job is game programmer, you will really have no time to make your own game. I mean, making your own game takes a lot of effort and time, and leading a whole team takes even more effort and time.

MMO Hardware and Bandwidth costs It's not yet our primary job, because the game is free, and we only make money by selling items, so there is no guarantee things will work in the future as they work now. But I guess when we will have over 1.5K players, I will quit my main job...

MMO Hardware and Bandwidth costs Yeah, well, when you are running an MMO server you really, really want on site support. It's just not worth it to shut your MMO down for a week or two if something happens to your server.

MMO Hardware and Bandwidth costs Look for the magazine Linux Format, EL should be there in the January issue. _winterdyne_, is the 400 pounds before or after taxes? What kind of tech support is offered? You will want same day or next day support.
