| Firewall Director: Richard Loncraine Stars: Harrison Ford, Virginia Madsen, Paul Bettany (Full Cast) Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures Inc. The Plot: Security specialist Jack Williams (Ford) is forced into robbing the bank he works for, as a bid to pay off the ransom on his kidnapped family. THE BUZZ: That's a dumb title. Ford knows audiences love it when he's in peril, so he's back in action-thriller mode and he's brought an excellent supporting cast along for the ride. Hopefully director Richard Loncraine's presence will be minimal. | The Pink Panther Director: Shawn Levy Stars: Steve Martin, Kevin Kline, Jean Reno (Full Cast) Studio: Columbia Pictures The Plot: Inspector Jacques Clouseau (Martin) is tasked by the duplicitous Chief Inspector Dreyfus (Kline) to solve the murder of a famous soccer coach and the disappearance of the infamous Pink Panther diamond. THE BUZZ: Did you hear the story that this project was reportedly greenlit in a parking lot? Did you hear the bad buzz caused Sony to move it from August of last year to the frozen tundra of February? With a new life in America, George's adventurous nature takes control, and he heads out into is new world. | Neil Young: Heart of Gold [limited] Director: Jonathan Demme Stars: Neil Young, Emmylou Harris, Pegi Young (Full Cast) Studio: Paramount Classics The Plot: A concert film of Neil Young's two-night performance at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium in the summer of 2005. THE BUZZ: Jonathan Demme loves his Americana, and few contemporary musicians represent the idea better than the Canadian Neil Young. So call it North Americana. Demme directs his first performance documentary since Stop Making Sense, and his subject has never been more popular. On stage, Young is joined by the luminous Emmylou Harris and his wife, Pegi.

| London [limited] Director: Hunter Richards Stars: Jessica Biel, Chris Evans, Jason Statham (Full Cast) Studio: Samuel Goldwyn Films LLC The Plot: Syd (Evans) and his coke dealer (Statham) lock themselves in the bathroom at the going away party for London (Biel), Syd's ex who's taking off with her new man. After a few hours of snorting drugs and carousing with some ladies, Syd works up the nerve to suggest to London that they share a final night together. THE BUZZ: Why would you go see London when you can be this stupid in real life? Isn't this why The Rules of Attraction tanked? Hunter Richards's "noxious debut film" (from Variety) has a grip over its actors, most of whom have gone on to better things since this project was made, and could suffer minor setbacks when this is pulled apart by critics and fans alike. | When a Stranger Calls Director: Simon West Stars: Camilla Belle (Full Cast) Studio: Screen Gems Inc. The Plot: During an otherwise routine babysitting gig, a high-school student (Belle) is harassed by an increasingly threatening prank caller. User Rating: THE BUZZ: We're hoping director West (Con Air and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider) got his horror bearings, and this remake becomes 2006's Red Eye -- in other words, a sleek, effective, thriller that clocks in at under 90 minutes. Meanwhile, there were a handful of great mock titles to throw around here -- When a Stranger Returns Your Call is still our favorite. Review: 2 out of 10 stars: Even by today's admittedly low horror movie standards, the remake of When a Stranger Calls qualifies as pure dreck, a movie so unsatisfying and so derivative it could provoke a hostile reaction from its audience. All tease with no payoff -- in fact, "tease" is too sympathetic a word -- it's a movie that exists purely as a concept with no fleshing out of any kind...more Message Boards: FUNNY THINGS PPL SAID IN THE THEATRE!! | dvd Showtimes | Trailers | Photos | Message Boards | User Comments | Reviews |
| Big Momma's House 2 Director: John Whitesell Stars: Martin Lawrence, Emily Procter, Nia Long (Full Cast) Studio: 20th Century Fox Pictures The Plot: On his latest assignment, FBI agent Malcolm Turner (Lawrence) once again goes undercover as Big Momma, and works as a nanny for an unhappily woman (Procter) who is under investigation for murder. User Rating: THE BUZZ: CSI: Miami's Procter boards the unavoidable sequel to the first box-office smash. The cuddly feel here (think: The Pacifier) should help Momma blow up worldwide, and it'll add more polish to Martin's cleaner, soberer image. (Though, did you see the commercials for his appearance on "Inside the Actors Studio"? Yikes.) And just where are Terrence Howard and Paul Giamatti this time around? Um, we think they're busy developing their next movies and picking out suits for the Oscars. Message Boards: Rating so low | This Crap will join the Bottom 100 tomorrow. | Nanny McPhee Director: Kirk Jones Stars: Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, Angela Lansbury (Full Cast) Studio: Universal Pictures The Plot: Governess Nanny McPhee (Thompson) uses magic to reign in the behavior of seven ne'er-do-well children in her charge.
User Rating: THE BUZZ: Based on the widely-read (in the U.K.) Nurse Matilda series, it's too soon to tell if Universal's planning on turning this into a franchise or not. In the meantime, we can cheers to another Thompson screenplay, and director Jones' follow-up to Waking Ned Devine. | Brokeback Mountain Director: Ang Lee Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Heath Ledger, Michelle Williams (Full Cast) Studio: Focus Features The Plot: Two young, modern-day cowboys (Gyllenhaal and Ledger) meet in the early 60s as both work as ranch hands on a sheep ranch in Wyoming. The two form a lifelong bond, even as their lives diverge and one becomes a rodeo star and the other a ranch hand. Based on the novel by Annie Proulx. User Rating: THE BUZZ: Once known as "the gay cowboy movie," Ang Lee's foray into Western territory was originally dogged by controversy at every turn, from the (rather graphic) screenplay excerpts leaked on the Internet, to clashes between the director and screenwriter Larry McMurtry (which were later chalked up to basic misunderstandings), to the film's almost-inclusion at Cannes (it wasn't finished yet). Once the film screened at the Venice Venice Film Fest, however, and the audience was left sobbing (and the film won the top prize), the awards buzz began, and the industry's other premiere films -- Capote and Walk the Line among them -- struggled to get out of the shadow Brokeback cast. | Hoodwinked Director: Cory Edwards Todd Edwards Stars: Anne Hathaway, Glenn Close, Patrick Warburton (Full Cast) Studio: The Weinstein Company LLC The Plot: Set at the end of the story of Little Red Riding Hood, police officers from the animal world investigate a report of a disturbance at Grandma's house. They discover two suspects, a weapon, numerous criminal offenses, and a potential connection to a case involving the elusive "Goody Bandit." User Rating: THE BUZZ: The Weinsteins scored this low-profile animated project at Cannes earlier this year. They proceeded to give it a high-profile Christmas release ... before burying it in January. But the joke's on us, I guess, as Hood and her pals debuted big in its opening weekend; it was originally thought to be the #1 movie, but lost to Glory Road in a photo-finish. This of course resulted in a sequel announcement: Hood vs. Evil. Review: 1 out of 10 stars:: If you're of a certain age, you remember these terrible, terrible live-action Pippi Longstocking movies from Sweden in the early 70s. | Underworld: Evolution Director: Len Wiseman Stars: Kate Beckinsale, Scott Speedman, Bill Nighy (Full Cast) Studio: Screen Gems Inc. The Plot: As the war between the Death Dealers and the Lycans nears a deciding battle, the war's origins are revealed, and Selene (Beckinsale), the vampire heroine, seeks revenge on her own kind after she's betrayed. User Rating: THE BUZZ: Sure, Underworld was a theatrical and DVD success, but fans ultimately felt underserved by the film's sense of history and gun-heavy action scenes. (Okay, maybe not "fans" as much as "me".) Director Les Wiseman sough to make a sequel that wouldn't skimp on chapter of history and buckets of blood. What this all means is: More Kate in leather! More cheesy slo-mo leaps from tall buildings! More lycans and vamps with guns! More ... Speedman! In the sequel to Beckinsale's breakout movie, we're promised a Dark Ages werewolf vs. vampire battle, and a glimpse of Corvinus, the father of both species! Review: 4 out of 10 stars: This picture is little more than a muddled epilogue to the story introduced in 2003's Underworld. Seemingly confused by its own legacy, Underworld: Evolution has anti-climatic secrets for you to puzzle out, provided you don't throw yourself to the wolves before the third act.

| Something New Director: Sanaa Hamri Stars: Sanaa Lathan, Simon Baker, Golden Brooks (Full Cast) Studio: Focus Features The Plot: Career woman Kenya (Lathan) has little time in which to consider what her perfect man would be like. However, iIn Brian (Baker) she finds a guy who, despite all outward appearances, just might be the one. User Rating: THE BUZZ: We like Sanaa Lathan, and we love UPN's Girlfriends (doesn't this look like a 100-minute episode of that show?), so we're near-ecstatic for director Sanaa Hamri's debut. Two Sanaas. One smart-sounding romantic comedy. What's not to like? Review: 7 out of 10 stars: Something New is an ideal romantic comedy. Director Sanaa Hamri and screenwriter Kriss Turner conspire to revitalize the genre with an atypical mix of humor, conflict, and drama, and they are steadfast in their intention to entertain, not preach. Though they have not made a technically proficient film (the cinematography, lighting, and editing is all sub-standard), I'll take star Sanaa Lathan's romantic issues over Sandra Bullock or Reese Witherspoon or Jennifer Lopez's any day...more Message Boards: Brian Fell for Kenya Right Away | A black woman's perspective Showtimes | Trailers | Photos | Message Boards | User Comments | Reviews |
| Annapolis Director: Justin Lin Stars: James Franco, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson (Full Cast) Studio: Buena Vista Pictures The Plot: A young man (Franco) who's good with his fists realizes his dream of attending the Annapolis Naval Academy. User Rating: THE BUZZ: Lin's Better Luck Tomorrow was so influential that Disney pulled him up from the minors to make their military vision a reality (three years, three boxing films -- what gives?). We think it'll take a nation of analysts and marketing types to determine this film's target audience, and then get them into theaters in January. We're holding out for Lin's remake of Oldboy, anyway. Review: 3 out of 10 stars: Maybe it was just because I was sick, but I found Annapolis to be the best thing for a cold since Nyquil. It calmed me, it soothed me, it helped me to forget about my stuffy sinuses and body aches, and ultimately it lulled me into a deep, pleasant sleep. User Rating: THE BUZZ: 8 out of 10 stars: "The only time you're allowed to talk to me is onstage," Reese Witherspoon says to Joaquin Phoenix near the end of Walk the Line, and they're words well spoken, for when either of these two stars are performing, separate or together, this movie comes electrifyingly to life. ...more Review: 8 out of 10 stars: "The only time you're allowed to talk to me is onstage," Reese Witherspoon says to Joaquin Phoenix near the end of Walk the Line, and they're words well spoken, for when either of these two stars are performing, separate or together, this movie comes electrifyingly to life. | The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe Director: Andrew Adamson Stars: Tilda Swinton, Georgie Henley, William Moseley (Full Cast) Studio: Buena Vista Pictures The Plot: The four Pevensie children travel through their wardrobe to the land of Narnia, where they learn of their destiny from a lion messiah.
User Rating: THE BUZZ: Swinton as the White Witch? I could die a happy man right now. Five bucks says the same's true for Shrek writer-director Adamson, who jumps from DreamWorks to Disney to pilot his first live-action solo project. Obviously, Disney's eyeing this as the first in a potential franchise of seven films, though Wardrobe is the only book that has been optioned to date. Over the summer, the marketing forces behind The Passion of the Christ's global success signed up to work the film; the classy, omni-present campaign will be enough for Narnia to reign supreme until Kong comes to town. Review: 7 out of 10 stars: Though the effects are impressive and the intent noble, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is a stumble-bum of a film. It succeeds neither as a children's film (though more on that later) nor, more importantly, as an epic fantasy, on the order of The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
