Firm to settle e-mail case for $1.1 million

Published: March 12, 2006, 7:20 PM PST

Datran Media, an e-mail marketing company, has agreed to pay $1.1 million to settle accusations that it misused personal data reportedly mined from 6 million e-mail addresses across the country.

The settlement is scheduled to be announced on Monday, New York's Assistant Attorney General, Karen Geduldig, told Reuters, noting that her office began investigating Datran in the summer of 2005.

She declined to provide further details of Datran's alleged actions.

The New York-based company admits no wrongdoing under the terms of the settlement, said Datran spokesman Mark Naples.

Datran sends marketing e-mail messages to addresses provided by partner companies, a practice that some people consider spam.

Its clients include Business Week, Columbia House, Fox Home Entertainment, NASCAR, Orbitz and Pitney Bowes, according to its Web site
