Review by Chris 'Bagel'

Most of the hype surrounding this game was that it was supposed to be bringing back “old-school gameplay”. The developers and suits at Capcom were saying that the core elements that made games fun were gone and Maximo was going back to the roots.

I have to say, they did a really good job. The first thing I noticed about this game was the buffed-to-a-shine polished look. The graphics are just squeaky clean, with no glitching and really tight textures and colors that jump out at you.

The sound was right up to par with the graphics. Really satisfying sword clanking, bones crashing, and thunder pounding. The music really set the mood for the levels. I remember playing it and thinking in my head “this is so much fun!”. Made me feel like I was 14 again (and no, not in that way)!
The gameplay followed suit with precise controls and pretty tight camera work. I did have trouble a few times with the camera, but it’s not much of a problem, and would probably be my only complaint about the game. Had they allowed a Zelda-esque lock-on camera, it could have been useful, but I’m thinking it would have slowed the game down a bit.

So the question I’m always asking myself as I’m reading reviews is, do I want to blow 50 bucks on this one? For this game, it’s all up to the kind of gamer you are. I like to play through a game, try and collect things along the way, but am never concerned with going back and making sure I get every item and search every nook and cranny. There are just too many good games these days, and my time’s precious (insert joke here).
If you have a spare 50, or love to go back and play games until they’re beaten to a pulp, pick this one up. Otherwise, I’d rent it a few times, and go through it.
