Defending U.S. Champion Hikaru Nakamura, 18, scored only 0.5 points in his first three games at the 2006 U.S. Championship in San Diego. He came back with five straight wins before drawing the eventual winner Alexander Onischuk in the last round. Nakamura was awarded the Bent Larsen Fighting Chess Prize, worth $5,000, for his effort. Congratulations to 2006 U.S. Chess Champion Alexander Onischuk, 30, of Baltimore, MD, and to U.S. Women's Champion Anna Zatonskih, 27, of Holtsville, NY.
Onischuk finished a half point ahead (+5-0=4) of his nearest competitors in Group A of the preliminary Swiss system tournament. In the two-game rapid chess final match, he beat the winner of Group B, Yury Shulman, 30, of Barrington, IL, to claim the title and the $25,000 first prize. Zatonskih, the highest scoring woman (+3-2=4) in Group B, won the title and $12,500 by defeating defending Women's Champion Rusudan Goletiani, 25, of Hartsdale, NY in the final match.
The event was held in San Diego, 2-12 March.

The FIDE World Championship from 1948 through 1990 was largely a closed contest among the best Soviet players. They dominated the Candidate events and played each other in title matches, often held at Moscow. The Soviet record was interrupted only by the American Bobby Fischer in 1970-72 and by the Soviet refugee Viktor Korchnoi in 1976-83.

The next election will be held during the FIDE General Assembly, 2-4 June, which coincides with the end of the 37th Chess Olympiad at Turin, Italy.
The vote will be a defining event for FIDE.

The 2...e6 variations of the Sicilian Defense start 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4. The watchwords are flexibility and double-edged play. Unlike the 2...d6 variations, Black keeps the a3-f8 diagonal open for the Bishop. The move ...Bb4 is often an option and ...Bc5 is sometimes possible.
