The board
Chinese Chess is played on a board which
contains 64 squares. The pieces are
placed on the intersections of the lines, called points. Thus, Chinese Chess is played on
effectively a board of 9 x 10 points. On each side of the board in Chinese Chess, there is a
palace,
areas of size three by three points: these are distinguished by the cross
that goes through it.. Neither
the king nor the guards of the kings are allowed to leave the palace. In the middle, there is a river.
Each player has the following pieces:2 Rooks, 2 Knights, 2 Elephants, 2 Mandarins,
1 King, 2 Cannons, and 5 Pawns.
The opening setup is as follows:
From left to right on the bottom and top rows,
the chessmen are in the order of a rook, a knight,
a minister, a guard, a king, a guard, a minister, a knight, and a rook. On
the third rows, you see the cannons, and on the fourth row you see the
pawns. Pieces at the bottom half are red.
