Clonaid summoned to U.S. courtAttorney asks Clonaid to reveal whereabouts of still-unverified baby and mother
FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (CNN) -- A Florida attorney subpoenaed one of the vice presidents of Clonaid on Saturday, ordering him to testify in court. The attorney is seeking a guardian for the baby the cloning organization claimed to be the first human clone. The subpoena from Florida attorney Bernard Siegel orders Clonaid executive Thomas Kaenzig to appear at a civil proceeding Jan. 22. Siegel said his office delivered two summonses: to Kaenzig and to "Jane Doe," the child's alleged mother. The summonses ask Clonaid to divulge the whereabouts of the still-unverified baby and mother. The president of Clonaid announced last month that a cloned baby called "Eve" had been born Dec. 26 in an undisclosed location. The company was founded by the Raelian sect, which believes mankind was created by extraterrestrials. Last month, Siegel filed a petition in Broward County to have a guardian appointed for the world's first alleged human clone. Siegel said he hopes the legal action will produce some answers. "I would be delighted if Mr. Kaenzig would be put under oath and finally someone can find out perhaps ... what this story really is," the attorney said on CNN. "I think a guardian needs to be appointed for this child, if there is a child, and something must be done to protect the child." Siegel said he's concerned that the alleged cloned baby may need extensive medical treatment, something he says Clonaid probably cannot offer. He said a court needs to determine what's best to protect the child. Clonaid has barred a team of scientists who were to verify the cloning claim from performing tests, giving them no access to the purported child or mother. The legal papers were delivered to Kaenzig at the 2003 Money World Conference at the Broward County Convention Center in Ft. Lauderdale, where he is on the two-day agenda as a keynote speaker. A representative of Clonaid could not immediately be reached for comment.
