The new version of Rybka - Rybka 2.2 - has been released. The author
of the program Vasik Rajlich has managed to make significant improvements
to the program and its leadership among chessplaying programs is
now beyond question. Excellent evaluation of the dynamic factors
combined with subtle definition of positional nuances allows it
to achieve outstanding results in playing and high quality analysis.
It is confirmed not only by the rating of independent agency CEGT
(http://www.husvankempen.de/nunn/),
but also by its victory at the Dutch Open Computer Chess Championship
with a result of 9/9! Note: Rybka 2.2 UCI is not a standalone program:
it can be connected to the following interfaces: Fritz interface
(programs Fritz / Junior / Shredder / Hiarcs), ChessBase 9, Chess
Assistant 8 and 9, Chess Partner interface, Shredder UCI interface,
and to the free interface Arena, etc. If compared to version 2.1,
the new 2.2 version has the following advantages: much better tactically;
much better in longer games; better in blitz too. During testing,
a blitz match (3m + 1s inc) between Rybka 2.2 and Rybka 2.1 ended
+111 =206 -55 (+51 Elo) in favour of 2.2. Rybka 2.2 UCI includes:
Rybka 2.2 UCI (two versions for 32 and 64 bit Windows), rybka.dll
for easier connection to Chess Assistant 9; Rybka Win-Finder (an
experimental engine: and a very tactical version of Rybka, often
10x or even 100x faster on tactical problems, but with some weak
spots - weaker than Rybka 2.2 version but can be useful due to its
strong tactical function Rybka Win-Finder version will be sent by
e-mail); opening book for Fritz interface. When purchasing Rybka
2.2 UCI, you receive the strongest playing program via the internet
at once and the right to receive the next update (2.3). System

The Chess Informants 1-40 CD-ROM brings you all the games from
volumes 1-40 of the famous periodical - including annotations -
on one PGN database, which can be used with all proprietary chess
database software such as ChessBase or Fritz. But you do not need
to own any software as the CD-ROM comes equipped with Chess Informant's
own reader software which gives you access to all the games and
annotations via its own set of facilities, comprehensive indexing
and search features and the top-quality Crafty analysis engine.
Chess Informant started in 1966, so this collection of 40 complete
volumes' worth of data brings you the games from January 1966 through
to December 1985, and has annotations by the greatest collection
of players imaginable... Euwe, Botvinnik, Smyslov, Tal, Petrosian,
Spassky, Fischer, Karpov, Kasparov, Khalifman, Anand - that's all
of the world champions playing during that era!
The games from volumes 41-75 of the famous periodical, including
annotations, on one PGN database, which can be used in the same
way as Chess Informants 1-40 (see above). Covers the period January
1986 to May 1999 - and you can add Kramnik and Ponomariov to list
of stellar contributors. Also comes with Chess Informant Reader
2.1+ and Chess Informant Expert Lite.
This CD-ROM has all the 5,374 annotated games which appeared in
the five editions of Informator covering June 1999 to January
2001. It comes with its own reader software so there is no need
to own any other database software. You can play through games,
enter your own data, search and analyse with the built-in Crafty
engine (against which you can also play games). And there are all
the usual Informator features, such as the ten best games of the
previous edition, combinations, endgames, etc, in a browser-like
window. But, for those who use ChessBase, Fritz or other proprietary
systems, the data is also supplied as a PGN file which can be added
to existing databases. That makes it tremendously good value.

September 2002) plus all the usual Informator features in an electronic

The complete combinations sections from all volumes of Informator
on one disk! Sahovski Informator writes: "In response
to popular demand, Chess Informant has decided to dig deep
into the treasure-trove filled with all the 3,002 combinative masterpieces
published in Informators combinations section from the 5th
to 91st Volume over the 35-year span. Our Editorial Board resisted
the trend of some recent compilers who often aspired to rewrite
the history with the help of our silicon friends we felt
that true collectors of the Informant volumes would want to add
the original trademark sections to their collection. Naturally,
some examples might have lost their appeal or even prove seriously
flawed, but our main goal was to preserve the spirit of the moment
when they were originally published. Though we understand that some
users may get misled when they try to solve some examples in the
training mode, we had to make a compromise and keep all the main
lines intact. Enjoy!"

This
disk contains a database of over 7,500 games plus 37 detailed database
surveys, by CC-GM Janis Vitomskis, CC-IM Tim Harding and Martin
Bennedick. In addition there is a 58-page PDF (Adobe Acrobat) containing
an introduction to the ideas and evolution of the Marshall Counter-Gambit,
plus analytical articles. There is an HTML file (readable by internet
web browser) with a an easy guide to the Marshall, with
java play-throughs. The disk comes equipped with both ChessBase
and Adobe Acrobat Readers, although due to a production error there
is no Acrobat Reader for Macintosh users it is freely available
on the internet. The disk is rich in detail and content.
This disk contains 76,000 games and 46 opening books/trees, with copious annotations and hypertext files with structured indexes of variations. The databases are in new ChessBase (CBH) format and cover all lines of the Queens Gambit (including the Slav and Semi-Slav), the disk comes equipped with a ChessBase reader and a Fritz 6 demo version. The product design is unusual: the cover, and also some of the text files, are adorned with famous artistic depictions of women (who have sacrificed articles of clothing rather than the c-pawn), and there is also some very pleasant classical music to listen to.
