How to Promote a PawnPawn reaches its eighth rowPrevious | Next >> The Pawn gets a special reward for going the distance. The accompanying diagram shows a white Pawn which has moved all the way up to its seventh row. It has only one legal move -- to advance to the eighth -- as shown by the green circle. On the same move that the white Pawn reaches the eighth row, it must be changed into another piece. This is called 'promoting' the Pawn.
