St. Andrew's Episcopal School

“I Am St. Andrew’s”

St. Andrew's Episcopal School is an independent, coeducational, preparatory day school serving students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. St. Andrew's strives to enroll students of good character who give evidence of being able to benefit from a challenging learning experience. More than 1,100 students of diverse ethnic, cultural, religious and economic backgrounds currently attend St. Andrew's. The School's academic goal is to provide its students with an education as good as that offered by the best independent schools in the nation. Typically, 100 percent of St. Andrew's graduates attend four-year colleges and universities.

Founded in 1947, the School occupies two campuses. The South Campus houses the Lower School (pre-kindergarten through grade 4) in Jackson, and the North Campus houses the Middle School (grades 5-8) and Upper School (grades 9-12) in Ridgeland.

The School is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), belongs to the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and the National Association of Episcopal Schools (NAES), and is affiliated with the state's public and parochial schools through the Mississippi High School Activities Association. St. Andrew's continues its historic affiliation with St. Andrew's Cathedral as part of the church's ministry to the Jackson area.

St. Andrew's admits students without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sex, national or ethnic origins. The School does not discriminate in the administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, financial aid program, athletic programs or other school-administered programs.

The School Crest and Motto

The St. Andrew's Crest

The St. Andrew's Crest, designed by art teacher Lewis Hitt in 1978, contains a navy circular band, which surrounds a shield of the same color. On the circle is inscribed the school's name and the date 1947, the year of its founding. The shield is divided into four sections by a red or white cross in the form of the Greek letter "chi," whose shape recalls the cross on which Saint Andrew was martyred. The uppermost section contains a white magnolia, symbolizing Mississippi. The left section contains the Church shield, which is reminiscent of the school's Anglican heritage. Complementing this on the right is the brightly shining lamp of learning. In the lower portion is the anchor of faith, which symbolizes the school's Christian faith and recalls Saint Andrew's vocation as a fisherman. Finally, between the outer circle and the inner shield is the school motto, "Inveniemus Viam Aut Faciemus."

The motto, adopted by vote of the student body in 1979, is rendered in translation as "We will find a way, or we will make one." Truly, this phrase concisely expresses St. Andrew's efforts of recent years to become an outstanding school.

The official St. Andrew's hymn is "For All the Saints," and is sung to the tune Sine Nomine.

The School Prayer

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who has blessed us with the joy and care of children:
Bless, we pray you, St. Andrew's Episcopal School;
Give our teachers, parents and students light and strength so to train and learn, that all of us might love whatsoever things are true and pure and lovely;
Grant us grace to choose the good and to reject evil;
Give us knowledge and understanding of the mysteries of your creation;
All this we ask in the name of Him, who learned as a youth,
Your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
