The Year 2006 in Review
Chess news in 2006 was dominated by a World Championship unification match. Along with other news about top class GM tournaments, an Olympiad, a FIDE Presidential election, and a top man-machine match, there were human interest stories like Gormallygate.
The Year 2005 in Review
The year 2005 in chess saw Garry Kasparov's retirement, a new FIDE plan for the World Championship, a new FIDE World Champion, and Bobby Fischer's release from Japan to Iceland.
The Year 2004 in Review
The year 2004 in chess saw FIDE World Championship Knockout tournaments for men and women, a non-FIDE title bout between Vladimir Kramnik and Peter Leko, and the 36th Olympiad.
The Year 2003 in Review
The year 2003 was not great for chess. The reunification of the World Championship, which should have been the big story of the year, met only setbacks. The biggest events were Kasparov matches with two of the world's strongest chess playing computers.
The Year 2002 in Review
If chess were a wine, 2002 might not have been a great year, but it was certainly a very good year. Its highlights were a FIDE World Championship final, an Olympiad, and a brave attempt at reconciling the nine-year split in the World Championship title.
