Xiangqi pawns take in the same way as they move without taking.
Xiangqi pawns have a special ability that orthodox chess pawns do not: once they cross the center line of the board (called the river), they move move and capture one square to either side.
There are two pawns in the above diagram. Since one has moved past the center line of the board, it may move and capture one square forward or one square to either side (as shown with the black circles). The other pawn has not moved past the center line of the board, so it may only move and capture one square forward (as shown by the red circle).

Andy Thomas | None | yes, the pawn can capture sideways... once it has crossed the river...
Christine Bagley-Jones | None | there is only a few lines of info on this pawn, and your question is answered under the heading 'movement' and also in the diagram :)
a noob | Average | After the pawn had crossed the river can it kill sideways?
Charles Gilman | Good | Sorry, by 'at once', I meant 'immediately' or 'from the start' rather than 'at the same time', which I now see that it could be misinterpreted as. I should have given a rating as well.
Charles Gilman | None | It is also worth mentioning on this page the use of an essentially similar piece in the variants played in (1) Korea, where it can move all three directions at once; (2) Japan, where it moves only in the forward direction until it reaches the enemy camp and is then optionally gains 5 other one-step moves including the sideways ones. |
