The James Madison University Chess Club

is currently not meeting and is not an official JMU organization

If you are interested in reforming the club, contact Charlie Huffman, faculty advisor to the club in the past: huffmacj@jmu.edu  (540) 568-2916  Johnston 104

Meeting day and time will be announced here if there is interest in reforming the club

Information from previous years in which the chess club was active:

All JMU students (undergrad or grad), faculty, staff and anyone else affiliated with the university are eligible for membership in the JMU Chess Club.  Anyone interested in chess is welcome to come and play, even if not affiliated with JMU.  Collegiate tournaments held at JMU are limited to students, however.  Dates of these tournaments will be announced on this website.  Please bring your chess set if you have one, but come anyway if you don't have one.

Potential Activities: casual games as well as serious games, lessons, game analysis, tournaments - JMU students (undergrad or grad) have a chance to represent JMU in ACUI regional intercollegiate competition (see below)!  In addition to playing chess, the club in the past has also sponsored social, publicity, and fund-raising activities.  One meeting, for example, featured free food; another involved playing outside in the commons area to attract attention and boost membership.

Every year the ACUI (Association of College Unions International) sponsors a regional games tournament in which chess is one of the games.  This competition is open to all students, grad or undergrad, who are enrolled for at least 3 credit hours and have at least a 2.0 GPA.  JMU often participates (but not this year :( and is in a region that includes schools from VA, NC, SC, KY, and TN.  JMU will pay travel and housing expenses at the regional tourney for the top two (sometimes more) players.  You do not have to be a member of the JMU chess club to participate in this tournament.  Check this site in the fall (2004) to see if JMU will participate.

If you are visiting JMU, the campus is at the corner of I-81 and Port Republic Road in Harrisonburg, Virginia.  See the JMU website and then under "notes for visitors" click on "visiting and parking on campus" for where to go to get parking tag, directions to the club meeting place, campus map, etc.
