Artist Index

Objectives:

[i] To document the recordings made in New Orleans in the 'twenties,
[ii] To illustrate the diversity of music recorded in this period, and
[iii] To indicate current availability on compact disc.

Introduction:

[i] This research project was started in 1994, and initially focussed upon the jazz and blues recordings. I am acutely aware that the first complete 78rpm discography on CD-ROM will render this research practically redundant.

[ii] NewOrleans is generally considered to be the birthplace of jazz, and the musicians of New Orleans certainly dominated the jazz recording scene in the nineteen-twenties. Therefore it had always seemed to me to be somewhat ironic that the musicians who popularised New Orleans jazz throughout the world [Armstrong, Bechet, Dodds, Noone, NORK, ODJB, Oliver, Morton], rarely, if ever, recorded in their hometown - New Orleans.

[iii] This can be explained during the 'twenties by the simple facts that:
- they had almost all left N.O. before recording started there, and
- there were no recording studios in N. O. during the 'twenties, so it made more sense to record them in the Northern cities where they were playing and where there were studios.

[iv] This makes even more fascinating the recordings made by the artists who stayed behind, who presumably presented a picture of the ongoing and developing N. O. jazz tradition - black, white, creole, uptown & downtown- and the diversity of musical influences available in New Orleans and the surrounding district.

and

Numerous sleeve notes to LPs and CDs.

Discographical Notes:

[i] Titles are given using upper or lower case consistent with the information source.

[ii] Spellings of French and Spanish titles sometimes vary between sources; when in doubt I have operated by consensus or used the reissue version.

[iii] Personnels and other issue/reissue details can be found in Rust and/or Lord and/or Godrich, Dixon & Rye, Spottswood, the AMG Music Guide, etc.

[iv] Because I wish to stress the current availability of so much of this material on CD, I have only shown the first release [generally on 78rpm; occasionally on LP] of each title recorded. Almost all of the 230 jazz, blues and gospel titles that were originally issued are currently available on CD - see list on pages 55-57 of this document.

[v] Authors of tunes are not included. These are absent from most CD reissues.

[vi] Timings of tunes have not been included. They vary between reissues.

[vii] A distinction is made between a master being rejected, which negates any possibility of issue, and unissued which implies acceptance and the possibility of eventual issue. See the Louis Dumaine sessions in March 1927 as an example. These terms may have had differing significance in different companies.

Findings:

[i] "There was very little recording done in New Orleans until the 1940s" writes Sam Charters. During the 'twenties, there were fifteen field visits, at which at least 230 jazz, blues and gospel titles were recorded. This stacks up well against the other cities which did not boast a recording studio during the twenties.

[ii] Recordings were made by the major companies who sent teams to New Orleans and other cities, who set up camp in some suitable hall or hotel ballroom or music store and recorded non-stop during their stay.

[iii] The array of music recorded reflects the musical diversity and the range of musical stimuli available to all musicians in New Orleans and the surrounding region in the twenties. It is believed however that some artists [such as Lillian Glinn, Fiddlin' John Carson, the Leake County Revelers and many of the Cajun artists] came into New Orleans just for the recording sessions, and were not an on-going part of the New Orleans music scene.

[iv] In chronological order, the fifteen field visits took place as follows:

1924
March Okeh Mx 8556-8575

1925
January Okeh Mx 8889-8911
March Victor Mx B 32113-32132
September Columbia Mx W 140986-141004

1926
April Columbia Mx 142000-142027

1927
March Victor Mx BVE/CVE 37975-38005
April Columbia Mx W 143949-143984
October Columbia Mx W 145000-145042

1928
April Columbia Mx 146176-146226
November Brunswick Mx NOR 747-768
December Columbia Mx 147624-147665

1929
Feb/March Brunswick/Vocalion Mx 100-133
Sept/Oct Brunswick Mx 218-266
November Victor Mx 56494-56541
December Columbia Mx 111382-111397
and Mx 149570-149599
and Okeh Mx 403404-403449
and Okeh Mx 403500-403520

[v] Listing the sessions by matrix number brings to light groupings of recording sessions previously obscured by name/chronological listings, and, of course, groups them by field visit.

[vi] There are some interesting cross-cultural fertilizations. For example, while the recording by the white country Leake County Revelers is officially entitled "Make Me A Bed on the Floor", they actually sing "Make Me A Pallet on the Floor", and their recorded repertoire included "Leake County Blues" and "Lonesome Blues". The cajun artists recorded such titles as "It's Tight Like That", "Le Blues De Neg' Francais", "Slim's Blues", "French Blues", and "Far Away From Home Blues", and of course, both the Original Valentin Choral Club and Sam Morgan's Jazz Band recorded the spiritual "Sing On'.

[vii] After the Afro-American's obvious predominant influence on jazz generally, the names of the leaders and their sidemen demonstrate that it would be hard to over-emphasize the contribution of Americans of Italian origin to the development of the white jazz scene in New Orleans during this period.

The Columbia Master Book Discography, Volume III by Brian Rust confirms the location of the above recordings as New Orleans.

Notes:

[i] Compilations and collections are being issued almost daily. It is believed that most significant CD reissues up to August 1999 are included above.

[ii] Disky CDs. In 1996 I purchased, in the duty-free section of Moscow airport, a two-CD boxed set DCD 8005 "At the Darktown Strutters' Ball". The two CDs in the box were the correct CDs, but the sleeve notes came from another un-numbered Disky two-CD boxed set entitled "Les Joies de la Nouvelle Orleans".
