World Championship Candidates Semi-Finals Elista 2007

World Championship Candidates Semi-Finals Elista 2007. Playoffs 3rd June 2007.

Comments by Mark Crowther. Flash game notes by IM Malcolm Pein.

The Candidates first round concluded with playoff games in the three remaining matches. This leaves the round 2 matches start Wednesday June 6th 2007 - Aronian - Shirov, Leko - Bareev, Rublevsky - Grischuk, Gelfand - Kamsky

The format for the playoffs was 4 rapid games time rate 25m+10s, if needed then two blitz games 5m+10s, if still tied, then one armageddon game with 6m vs 5m (no increment), black has draw odds.

Rustam Kasimdzhanov won his FIDE World Championship title in Tripoli on the back of some tremendous victories in rapid and blitz playoffs. Boris Gelfand is no slouch either and he dominated the the match winning a close first game, surviving a disadvantage in the second and then taking advantage of a major blunder in the third when Kasimdzhanov over pressed to go though.

Alexei Shirov and Michael Adams both have huge experience and success in rapid playoffs. The tone of the match was set by the first game. Adams seemed to have completely equalised but somehow drifted into trouble and went down in 48 moves. The second game saw Shirov take the initiative with black almost straight away and he ground down Adams to take a 2-0 lead. Adams seemed to have some chances in the third game but they frittered away to a draw.

Levon Aronian and Magnus Carlsen had a battle royal in their six game normal time rate match and this continued into the rapid match. I don't think there is much doubt that Aronian is the stronger player at the moment and he missed a number of chances to finish things off but Carlsen's fighting spirit should stand him in good stead in the future. Carlsen really struggled with the black pieces and I think that was the real difference in the match. Its one thing to get a disadvantage but its another to get some of the really bad positions (at this elevated level) Carlsen did but that will come in time.

In game one he was gradually ground down. Carlsen didn't get much with white in the second game. Carlsen played a fairly loose opening in game three and managed to get a decent position and the game eventually drifted to a draw. Carlsen had to win the final rapid game with white to continue the match and he got little or nothing but the game was a long one and he eventually emerged with Queen and Pawn vs Queen in the ending. Aronian should have been able to hold but he went astray and lost in 84 moves. So the match went into a blitz playoff. Only a few minutes after equalising the match Carlsen had a truly disgusting position straight out of the opening with black. Although he did his best white's extra pawn always looked likely to count. Carlsen again was in a must win situation with white but he quickly was at a disadvantage and although he had a few tricks Aronian found his way through them and emerged with a winning position which he converted. We know Aronian is talented but he showed guts in the face of some real disappointments in this match and came through and won. Tough guy.
