I recently saw the new Maple Story ads for the North American market and I'm not really sure what to make of them. This one is reminiscent of every IRC room I've ever been in: *Razor slaps you around a bit with a large...

Interviews

I just got back from Digital Life in New York, and my preview of book 11 with Jeff Anderson, President & CEO of Turbine, and Allan Maki, Senior Designer for Lord of the Rings Online. I got to spend so much time with them, and got so much good information, I am going to break the Preview up into two parts. The first part will cover housing, the game in general, & a new character from the books!

We also have a bonus feature that shows the first ever in-game videos of the creature Gollum. Check them out here.

WarCry: Ok, so this new character from the books that is getting introduced....

Turbine: Hmmm I wonder.... You wouldn't be interested in seeing him would you?

WarCry: You mean in game? Actually see him running around in game?

Turbine: Ya, you want to?

At Digital Life this year I had the opportunity to sit down and talk with Jeff Anderson, President & CEO of Turbine, and Allan Maki, Senior Designer for Lord of the Rings Online. I am not sure what I did right during the interview, but somehow during it, I found myself staring at Gollum in game. Not concept art, but the little guy running around in game! I grabbed my camera and started snapping pictures, and taking video. I hope you enjoy it!

Developer Journals

This week, the Darkfall developer journal series continues with a brief, but enlightening entry on recent events at Aventurine SA. This last week saw a fan - Asp of the Lords of Death guild - visit the studio and Flambouras also reveals that they now have a specific Beta date chosen. Although, he isn't yet in a sharing mood on that front.

Asp from the Lords of Death guild visited us today. He was in a neighboring country on business and he made the trip down to meet us, see what we're up to, and to hang out. We were hoping to maybe give him a small beta preview but he couldn't delay his visit until Monday for our beta build to be up again. We talked about city building, conquest, tactics, the economy, griefing, clan cities, alignment, racial balance, and a lot more. He met several of the developers and saw some of the work. We let him play our demo to get a feel for the gameplay. Asp has played pretty much every MMOG out there since Ultima Online, and his reaction really elevated our spirits, made us remember what our goal is: to hopefully blow you away. We don't get that many visitors around here so it was great meeting with him. I believe he's going to write something on his impressions when he gets back home.

Editorials

Gaming is a serious industry, and so now you have serious gamers. But this I ask you: what ever happened to game being played just for fun?

"The standard response to this would simply be, 'Get over it; it's just a game' but for some individuals, it's not just a game, it's a way of life!"

This fortnight we look at how such an emotional investment into 'Age of Conan' may be affecting your own potential enjoyment of the experience the game has to offer now and at release.

Microsoft has decided to give Windows XP an extra six months of sales time, a deviation from their original intention to halt the popular operating system in January. The company notes that people likely want more time before they make any move towards Windows Vista.

Al Gillen, system software analyst with IDC, told the Seattle Times that Microsoft's decision to extend XP sales is not an indicator of the success or failure of Vista.

"If Windows Vista was selling really well and people were just falling all over themselves to get on it, there would still be customers that couldn't, for whatever reason, ... make the move in the short term," Gillen told the paper.

On the current 2.2.2 PTRs both the new Brewfest and Hallow's End events are up. While we've experienced the joys of transforming wands and gnome masks in the past, there's a twist this year as Neth informs us...

Hallow's End New Holiday World Event: The Headless Horseman has been seen terrorizing local villages.

Since then the location of the Headless Horseman has been discovered on the PTRs and reported on by Squeakytweaky in his post. Apparently he's summoned through a daily quest in the Graveyard wing of Scarlet Monestary. He's a level 70 elite boss that, according to a strategy provided by Katinie is a multiple phase fight that requires quite a bit of attention. His loot table seems to include multiple epic rings (melee DPS, healing, and caster DPS) and a rather fearsome looking epic plate helmet. Alongside these drops there are two single use broom mounts, a blue version that functions like a land mount and an epic one that allows you to fly. So far both only have one charge, but the day is not yet through, perhaps a unlimited use rare drop exists? If only...
