P.Harikrishna sponsored by Sun Group finished third after
playing well at the start. Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine won the
event with 7/9 with a dashing 3/3 finish at the tape. Tiviakov
took second place on 6 and Harikrishna of Hyderabad finished
third on 5.5. It was a category 17 event and Harikrishna has
made use of this exposure in this event. Harikrishna won four
games and lost two and drew three. |

Abhijeet
Gupta of Bhilwara Becomes GM: Young Indians
achieved plenty at Balaguer in Spain on July 25. Abhijeet
Gupta got his final GM Norm, Arun Karthik obtained his maiden
GM Norm, IM Norm for Soumya Swaminathan, second IM Norm for
Abhishek Das and WIM Norm For Padmini Rout of Orissa. However,
Abhijeet Gupta has to wait for the 2500 rating mark to achieve

S.P.Sethuraman
Wins: Chennai's 1993-born S.P.Sethuraman won the FIDE Rated 243-player Tamil Nadu State Championship
with 9/11. He tied with Arun Karthik for the title on 9/11 and
had the better tie-break score. He is the youngest player to
win the Tamil Nadu Championship in the last 55 years. It was
organised at Kodaikanal at the Kodaikanal Institute of
Technology, in Machur, Kodaikanal from May 23-30.
Sasikiran
Second In Sofia: K.Sasikiran
scored half a point from the last three games to let Topalov
win the M-Tel Masters at Sofia for the third time. Sasikiran
slipped from a one point lead to take second place with 5/10.
Sasi would gain 10 Elo from the event. 3-5 Mamedyarov,
Nisipeanu, Kamsky 5 each, 6 Adams 4.5. Overall, Sasi bt Adams,
Mamedyarov 1.5-0.5, drew Kamsky, Nisipeanu 1-1 and lost 0-2 to

Honoured: The 60th year
celebration of the Tamil Nadu State Chess Association took
place in Chennai on April 26. Cash prizes totalling Rs.4.50
lakhs were distributed to TN players for performances in 2005
and 2006. I wish Anand all the best to win the World Title
later this year, said TNSCA

FIDE took the Morelia/Linares Tournament for ratings, it
became clear that Anand moved to No 1 with 2786. Topalov
slid down to 2772 and shares the second place with
Kramnik. Harika jumped several places to take the 13th
place in the world among women. Kore became IM and India

No.1 ranked player in the chess world in the April 2007 rating
list. Anand's achievement
completes the dream of a young Chennai chess player who
started playing chess in 1975. His resume has it all now.

5th Parsvnath International Open, Delhi:
India's biggest open tournament got underway at the changed
venue, Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in Delhi from Jan 15.
Alexey Dreev of Russia won the event with 8.5/10 by remaining
undefeated. Gogineni Rohit beat Ganguly, Barua and Iuldachev
for his maiden GM norm and second place. It was organised by the

Ivanchuk
Wins: Experienced Vassily Ivanchuk, 38,
of Ukraine won the Category 18 Aerosvit Tournament at Foros in
Ukraine. He scored 7.5/11 and remained undefeated in the
12-player all-play-all that concluded on June 29. Sasikiran
lost to Van Wely with white and tied for the 11-12th places
with 4/11. His rating performance was 2593 and so he will be
losing Elo. See games

Prathamesh Sunil Mokal Wins:
The 45th PSNA National B Chess Championship concluded at
Dindigul
in Tamil Nadu on June 20. Prathamesh Mokal of Pune who wrested
lead early with 7/7 won the event with a better tie-break
score. He tied for the first place with four others: 2-5
B.Adhiban (TN), Ratnakaran (Rly), M.R.Venkatesh (PSPB),
S.Kidambi (PSPB) 9.5/13. WGM Nisha Mohota was among the 11 new
qualifiers. The other 10 were: B.Adhiban, Akshat
Khamparia, M.R.Lalith Babu, Preetham Sharma, Shashikant Kutwal,
Vidit Gujrathi, S.P.Sethuraman, Arun Karthik, R.Ashwath, Mehar
Chinna Reddy. The youngest qualifier is Mehar (12) and
oldest is Sudhakar Babu (42). The top 30 qualify for the

Vijayalakshmi
Earns Final GM Norm: A brilliant 4/4 start
and a 6.5/9 score gave S.Vijayalakshmi of Indian Airlines,
Delhi her final GM norm and her open title at Curto, Italy
some 50 kms east of Turin on May 1. She recorded a rating
performance of 2602. Her earlier norms came at Paris 2005 and
Kavala (Greece) 2006. She has to reach 2500 rating to get the
GM title She is on 2424 now.
The
44th National A, Valsad: Surya S Ganguly of
Indian Oil, Kolkata won the National A with 9/13 for the
fourth straight time. 45 Players played in this Swiss. Deepan
Chakkaravarthy was second. Four new players entered the top
six. Arun Prasad of Salem, Gogineni Rohit, Suvrajit Saha and

In Monte Carlo: Having
recently won the Linares Title for the second time, Anand is
on a high and is expected to be No.1 in the World when the
April 1, 2007 rating list is released. The 16th Amber
Blindfold and Rapid Chess Tournament is on at Monaco from
March 17-29 (Mar 21, 26 are free days). It is a 12-player
double all-play-all with one blind and rapid game. See games

Anand
Regains Linares Title With 8.5/14: Needing a
draw for the title, Anand played the Queen's Indian defence
and drew Ivanchuk in a rook and bishop ending after 31 moves.
Anand scored 8.5/14 and won the prestigious event held in
Mexico and Spain on March 10. Anand had won this event in
1998. Anand beat Carlsen 2-0, Morozevich, Leko 1.5-0.5, drew
Ivanchuk, Topalov and Svidler 1-1 and lost 0.5-1.5 to Aronian. games
Tigran
Petrosian Wins Kolkata Open: Tigran
Petrosian of Armenia won the International Open at Kolkata on
March 6 with 8/10. Darmen Sadvakasov and Sergey Tiviakov took
the second-third places with 7.5 points. Sriram Jha and G.N.Gopal
made 9-game GM Norms and tied for the fourth place. Petrosian
picked up USD 4,500 in prize money. This event took place at
the Gorky Sadan in Kolkata. SEE
