| Alexander Roshal 1936-2007 The famous Russian chess journalist Alexander Roshal has died after a long illness. Born 26th August 1936 died 21st May 2007. The 8th Individual European Chess Championships took place 2-16 April, 2007, in the International Congress Center, Dresden (Germany). 11 rounds Swiss system, 90 minutes for 40 moves plus 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move, starting from move one. Vladislav Tkachiev won the tie-breaks beating Ivan Cheparinov (1.5-0.5) Dmitry Jakovenko (1.5-0.5) and Emil Sutovsky 2-0 in the final. Sutovsky reached the final by beating Konstantin Sakaev (1.5-0.5) and Dusko Pavasovic (1.5-0.5). | Amber 2007 The 16th Amber Blindfold and Rapid Tournament was held at the Fairmont Monte Carlo Hotel in Monaco March 17th-29th 2007. The tournament was organized by the Association Max Euwe and the total prize-fund was € 216,000. Every day there was one round consisting of four sessions; two blindfold sessions (three encounters each) and next two rapid sessions. The first session started at 15.00 hrs local time. There were two rest days: March 21 and March 26. Vladimir Kramnik won the overall event by two points. He won the Blindfold event and finished joint second in the rapid. There was a four player rapid double round robin blindfold event which saw the favourites Magnus Carlsen and Peter Heine Nielsen finish on 4/6 (Carlsen beat Nielsen in one of their games). | FIDE Rating List. January 2007 The new January 2007 FIDE Rating list has been released. The World Championship match between Vladimir Kramnik and Veselin Topalov didn't change the order of the top three but Topalov lost 30 rating points from the match and the Essent tournament that followed it. Anand was inactive and Kramnik gained 16 points. A poor period for Peter Svidler cost him 22 rating points and a drop to 12th in the world, making the reverse journey from 12th to 4th was Shakhriyaz Mamedyarov. Judit Polgar gained 17 rating points and Ruslan Ponomariov 20 but otherwise changes were confined to single figures in the top 20. Cup The Final between Vassily Ivanchuk and Peter Leko - 8th January 2006. Photo © ACP World Cup press centre The 1st ACP World Rapid Cup took place in Odessa in the Ukraine 4th-8th January 2007. The event was sponsored by the Bank Pivdennyi based in Odessa and took place in the Hotel Londonskaya. The tournament organisers were the Bank Pivdennyi and the Association of Chess Professionals. The total prize fund was 136,000 US Dollars. 16 grandmasters participated in this Knock-Out tournament. The time control was 20 minutes for the whole game with an increment of 5 seconds per move, with blitz games (3mins + 2sec/m) to settle ties.
