World Championship Candidates Finals Elista 2007. Round 6 12th June 2007. Comments by Mark Crowther. Flash game notes by IM Malcolm Pein. There were only two matches that made it to the sixth and final game and only one game will progress to a tie-break tomorrow. The line up for Mexico City so far is Vladimir Kramnik, Viswanathan Anand, Peter Svidler and Alexander Morozevich who were already qualified. They will be joined by Peter Leko, Boris Gelfand, Levon Aronian and one of Alexander Grischuk or Sergei Rublevsky to make up an eight player field. Alexander Grischuk was badly beaten in game four as black against Sergei Rublevsky in the Scotch Defence. Two game later he unleashed the improvement 10...Bd4N! which certainly seems at least good enough to equalise. Grischuk thought for a long time on move 16. He had the choice to go for a powerful looking attack by sacrificing his rook or taking a perpetual check. He decided to take his chances in the rapid playoffs on Wednesday and took the draw. Rublevsky,S (2680) - Grischuk,A (2717) [C45] 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.Nxd4 Bc5 5.Nxc6 Qf6 6.Qf3 bxc6 7.Qg3 h5 8.h4 Nh6 9.f3 d5 10.Nc3 Bd4 [Much sharper than 10...Bb4 11.Bd2 dxe4 12.0-0-0 e3 13.Bxe3 Bxc3 14.bxc3 0-0 15.Qg5 Nf5?! 16.Qxf6 gxf6 17.Bf4 which led to a bad endgame in the fourth game of the match where Rublevsky levelled the scores] 11.Bd2 Rb8 12.0-0-0 Be5 13.Qg5 Qd6 Black's chances are in the middlegame, he has pressure against b2 and either Qb4 or Rxb2 are in theair 14.exd5 0-0 15.Bc4 [15.a3 Nf5 16.Bd3 Bf6 17.Qxh5 g6 18.Qg4 Ne3 is good for Black] 15...cxd5 16.Bxd5 [After 16.Bb3 c6 17.Qxh5 Nf5 with good play for the pawn. Black has a strong centre and the white queen is not well placed.] 16...Qxd5 [Black spent a good deal of time here. He was probably considering 16...Rxb2 17.Kxb2 Qxd5 18.Rhe1 Bf5 19.Qe7 But probably considered it too dangerous. MC (19.Qe3 Rb8+ 20.Ka1 Bf6; 19.Rb1) ] 17.Nxd5 Bxb2+ 18.Kb1 Bc3+ 19.Kc1 Bb2+ 20.Kb1 Bc3+ 1/2-1/2 Alexei Shirov was no doubt hoping that he would be able to stir things up as white in a closed Ruy Lopez against Levon Aronian. Instead Aronian who only needed a draw to go through to Mexico City got the edge in the opening, possibly after Shirov turned down 15.d4 which is probably more critical. Shirov was left with a bad position and only a small amount of time when he agreed the draw and to his own elimination.Shirov,A (2699) - Aronian,L (2759) [C88] 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 Be7 6.Re1 b5 7.Bb3 0-0 8.d3 [Nobody dared to take on Aronian in the Marshall Attack after 8.c3 d5 9.exd5 Nxd5 10.Nxe5 Nxe5 11.Rxe5 c6 when Black continues Bd6 and Qh4 with an attack for the pawn] 8...d6 9.c3 Na5 10.Bc2 c5 11.Nbd2 [This is a standard Ruy Lopez position but White has saved a tempo by not playing 11.h3 However he will lose that tempo if he ever plays d3-d4] 11...Nc6 12.Nf1 Re8 It is worth noting that this position has been defended by amongst others Amos Burn (1911) Raoul Capablanca, Sammy Reshevsky, Mikhail Tal and Vladimir Kramnik. White usually plays 13.Ng3 or 13.h3 here and Aronian lost to Judit Polgar in 2003 after 13.a4 but Shirov has a different idea 13.a3 [13.Ng3] 13...h6 14.b4 [14.Bb3!? Adams-Van der Sterren would keep more tension and if 14...Be6 15.Bxe6 fxe6 16.b4] 14...Be6! 15.Ng3 d5! Black is already at least equal 16.exd5 Qxd5 17.Be3 Rac8 [17...c4] 18.Nd2 Nb8 [Neatly countering White's plan of 18...Ne4 attacking 19.bxc5] 19.Nge4 Nbd7 20.Bb3 [20.Qf3 Nxe4 21.dxe4 Qc6 is better for Black] 20...Qxd3 21.Bxe6 fxe6 22.Qf3 cxb4 23.axb4 Nxe4 24.Nxe4 Nf6! 25.Nxf6+ Bxf6 26.Rxa6 Qxc3 27.Rb1 draw White has nothing better than Bc5 allowing an exchange of queens into an endgame where Aronian is better 1/2-1/2 Aronian, Levon - Shirov, Alexei 1-0 41 D20 QGA Shirov, Alexei - Aronian, Levon 1/2 46 E15 Queens Indian Aronian, Levon - Shirov, Alexei 1/2 68 D20 QGA Shirov, Alexei - Aronian, Levon 1/2 83 C88 Ruy Lopez Closed Aronian, Levon - Shirov, Alexei 1/2 34 D89 Gruenfeld Alekhine Shirov, Alexei - Aronian, Levon 1/2 27 C88 Ruy Lopez Closed WCh Candidates Finals Elista RUS (RUS), 6-13 vi 2007 --------------------------------------------------------------- 1 2 3 4 5 6 --------------------------------------------------------------- Aronian, Levon g ARM 2759 1 = = = = = 3.5 2756 Shirov, Alexei g ESP 2699 0 = = = = = 2.5 2702 --------------------------------------------------------------- Leko, Peter - Bareev, Evgeny 1-0 34 B17 Caro Kann Bareev, Evgeny - Leko, Peter 1/2 15 D11 Slav Defence Leko, Peter - Bareev, Evgeny 1-0 41 B17 Caro Kann Bareev, Evgeny - Leko, Peter 1/2 52 E32 Nimzo Indian 4.Qc2 Leko, Peter - Bareev, Evgeny 1/2 19 B19 Caro Kann WCh Candidates Finals Elista RUS (RUS), 6-13 vi 2007 --------------------------------------------------------------- 1 2 3 4 5 6 --------------------------------------------------------------- Leko, Peter g HUN 2738 1 = 1 = = . 3.5 2792 Bareev, Evgeny g RUS 2643 0 = 0 = = . 1.5 2589 --------------------------------------------------------------- Grischuk, Alexander - Rublevsky, Sergei 1-0 35 B84 Sicilian Scheveningen Rublevsky, Sergei - Grischuk, Alexander 1/2 18 C45 Scotch Game Grischuk, Alexander - Rublevsky, Sergei 1/2 49 B85 Sicilian Scheveningen Rublevsky, Sergei - Grischuk, Alexander 1-0 66 C45 Scotch Game Grischuk, Alexander - Rublevsky, Sergei 1/2 18 B85 Sicilian Scheveningen Rublevsky, Sergei - Grischuk, Alexander 1/2 20 C45 Scotch Game WCh Candidates Finals Elista RUS (RUS), 6-13 vi 2007 -------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 2 3 4 5 6 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Grischuk, Alexander g RUS 2717 1 = = 0 = = 3.0 2680 Rublevsky, Sergei g RUS 2680 0 = = 1 = = 3.0 2717 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Kamsky, Gata - Gelfand, Boris 1/2 23 B92 Sicilian Najdorf with 6.Be2 Gelfand, Boris - Kamsky, Gata 1/2 51 D15 Slav Defence Kamsky, Gata - Gelfand, Boris 0-1 58 D02 Queen's Pawn Game Gelfand, Boris - Kamsky, Gata 1/2 54 D94 Gruenfeld Closed Kamsky, Gata - Gelfand, Boris 0-1 53 B52 Sicilian Rossolimo WCh Candidates Finals Elista RUS (RUS), 6-13 vi 2007 --------------------------------------------------------------- 1 2 3 4 5 6 --------------------------------------------------------------- Gelfand, Boris g ISR 2733 = = 1 = 1 . 3.5 2854 Kamsky, Gata g USA 2705 = = 0 = 0 . 1.5 2584 --------------------------------------------------------------- |
