Asuka Nakamura

Scholastic Chess Champion

Starting in 1992, Asuka has blazed a fast path across the Scholastic Chess landscape, winning thirteen National Scholastic Chess titles, from Kindergarten to Tenth Grade His peak rating-to-age achievement was ((age x 100)+1000) - a clear barometer reading of outstanding chess talent.

His success has been recognized by both the chess press and the popular press. His achievements were noted, along with those of his brother Hikaru, in an article in the December 2001 issue of Sports Illustrated, titled "On the Board Early." The writer notes: "From 1993 to 2000 he won 47 consecutive matches in the National Grade School Championships." He has twice appeared on the cover of Chess Life; in February 1999, shown at EuroDisney with Mickey Mouse and former World Champion Anatoly Karpov, and in June 2002 as part of the "Weera Family" team, winners of the prestigious US Amateur Team East Championship.

Asuka has also added organizational activities to his chess experience; he started the White Plains High School Chess Club in December 2002.

Asuka says:
Why I play: "The great aspect about chess is that it makes strategic thinking fun. Chess is universal; I can go anywhere and play a game of chess."
Why I teach: "I believe that chess heightens the thinking process and helps students develop into more critical thinkers. I believe chess has helped me, and that's why every kid should have the same opportunity."

Asuka is currently on leave from NSCF duties as he pursues his Undergraduate studies at the Wharton School.
