The New Year

It is Diwali-the New Year celebration for some of the people across the nation. 'Deepavali' begins the celebration of Hindu New Year. Though, most of the people have adopted the western form of New Year celebration on 31st December. But still for most of the Hindus like businessmen and traders, Deepavali marks the beginning of the new financial year. So, let us know about Diwali-the New Year, Diwali celebration and religious Diwali.

Diwali is indeed one of the most significant Indian festivals. Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi are worshipped on this Day. Lord Ganesha is considered auspicious and is the symbol of wisdom, whereas goddess Lakshmi is the symbol of wealth. On this day, people light 'diyas' to scare away evil and welcome positive energy, good health, wealth and prosperity in the family. According to the Hindu mythology, it is believed that only brightly lit homes and shops are visited and blessed by Goddess Lakshmi. Hence, cleaning and whitewashing prior to the day of Deepavali is the interesting activity for shops and houses.
The first day of Diwali is a New Year of business. All companies pay off debts and begin afresh. The motor companies decorate their cars with flowers and herbs so that their business runs well in the New Year. They close their old account books and start afresh on the day of Diwali. In fact, some people while worshipping deities also keep their books of accounts nearby so that it is blessed and there is increased flush of income throughout the year.
Traditionally, people wear new clothes garments and exchange special Diwali gifts and greetings. This is probably for the fact that they consider their New Year has begun. Accordingly most of the traditions of a New Year celebration are all present. Diwali 'rangolis' are made and floors and walls are painted to usher in good fortune. Fresh flowers, exchanges of gifts, new clothes, meeting with friends and family, and feasting are part of the colorful festival.
