Subject: Great GK BrainBLITZ Day almost here!

Message:
I want to announce a Special event for all the special Chess players here on GK. It is not an OFFICIAL GK event, but just something I have cooked up.
So please take the Opportunity to Attend the
"Special Secret GK Golden Blitz-0-Rama"

on SUNDAY evening at 3:55 PM ... GK Time to 5:55PM GK Time (That is USA Pacific timezone, which equals start at 5:55 Central USA Time or 11:55PM Start by London Time. From that everyone should be able to figure it out.)
***
No preregistration needed. Just show-up. A BYOB event. FREE to GK players. \
The purpose is to try to get more of the regular GK-Corr type chessplayers to show up and get in some games together.
I'll be there, and since this IS a Special Unofficial GK Event ... I've waived my appearance fee~! }8--)
PERHAPS some of you will wish to record some of your games for a Blitz-o-rama games forum afterwards?! That would be great if you wish to. If you have any questions, I'm here ... or you know where to find me @ ccmcacollister
Tho no registration required, if WOULD be GREAT to see some folks put their names here in this Thread as probable attendies. I know its short notice, that the way things are going lately. And we'll see how it goes.
Please do be polite and reserve heckling for your special friends :))

N/C (No Computers ... er, just your Net PC that it but no engines)
Not a N/S event, stinky cigars welcome online ~!
WC accessible, probably, if you are at home

And any suggestions anyone wants to make are most welcome, tho likely may not be applied until future event since this is short notice and all.

I will be there, but do you know how many players play blitz at a single time in Gk ? assumig it is in thousands. then (for me or a single corr player ) to connect our 100 or so corr chess people will be a 99/999 almost 1/10. so the odds are 1 to 9 that you are playing a non corr player. I dont know how it will work out.

Message:
Thanks very much for the invite, Craig--all I can say now is that I'll do my best. Wife, kids, work, yard...all the major obligations. We'll see how it goes.

On a related note, in preparation for the Blitz Bash I played my first game here on GK blitz (first here in 3 1/2 years as a member!). I'm 1-0, so watch out--I'm on a hot streak!

Cripes - I haven't blitzed for months!
Thanks for the invitation, Craig. Sounds like 11:55a.m. Monday, our time. H'mmm: close to lunch time. I'll try to make it, but no guarantees. I'm not at my best at food time...
Cheers,

There is no formal pairing here you know and there will doubtless be others blitzing the 10 min mixed in. After all its BETA and that is like wilderness or something in Computer speak isnt it?

Hopefull we all get to run into a number of others from forum readers and corr play etc and see what happens ... see someone you now anyway I hope. So thats all for now.
I must go turn up my Processes now to high :))

A PROBLEM ...

Message:
I notice when using FIREFOX at least , the GK blitz when I click in is automatcallly putting hte board as MINIMIZED so I have to go and bring it up . Beware if you encounter that.
If you try to sign in two times and it says you are already playing, you have it there for sure

Also a tip

Message:
you cannot Exit the area without it abandoning your game ... unless you simply minimize instead. Dont use the corner x as it does abandon. Can resign or draw. or minimize to see a profile if you like then maximize or restore to come back ...

Best moment...

Message:
Played for about an hour, 3 wins (not counting 2 instant resignations without moves being played - what's the deal there?) and a loss, this last being the first complete game. That was where my worst moments came - blundered exchange, walked into a mate in one... tsk, tsk.
Best moment was this opoosite side castling game in which I had given up a knight to open lines against White's king. I'm not sure about the correctness of the sac, but this interesting position arrived, with Black to play:
b
Play went:
1...Rf4
2.Qe1!? (I was still wondering what to do about 2.Qc2 when this came through. But 2...Rxb4! looks good enough to recover the piece with a good game)
2...Bxb4
3.axb4 Qa2ch
4.Kc2 Rc4ch
5.Kd3 ... (and now for the best moment...)
5... Ra3ch!
6.Ke2 ... (If 6.bxa3 Qc2ch 7.Ke3 Re4#)
6... Re4ch
7.Kf1 Rxe1ch
8.Nxe1 Qxb2
9.Kg1 Qxb4 etc.
Later on I exchanged down to a winning rook and pawn ending.

In my only game with the White pieces, I was given a "get out of jail free" card. The position was something like this (I don't recall the exact details):
w
After 1.Rfe1 came 1...Bxa1. I hadn't even noticed the a-rook was attacked! But a few seconds showed the way...
2.Bxb6ch ... like the parting of the Red Sea! OK, it's a standard masked battery, but my thinking earlier had been on entirely different lines. Blitz is a funny game.
2...Kf8 3.Bxd8 Rxd8 4.Rxa1 and White went on to win.
Thanks Craig for the idea, though I faced only Blitz specialists as far as I can make out. Didn't get to play the posters in this thread anyhow...
Look forward to others' "best moments" etc.
Cheers,
Ion

ionadowman : " not counting 2 instant resignations without moves being played - what's the deal there?"

I can't answer for everyone, but I have had this happen to me before too. Sometimes, if we're lucky, we'll both try to start another game, and happen to get paired up with each other again, only with colors reversed. Then, the player will often move.

So, I get a blitz game against XXX with me as white. XXX immediately resigns. I start a new game, and end up against XXX again, but now I have black. XXX moves.

It seems to me that some people just wait for the color that they want. Ratings aren't affect, and I guess they don't care for wasting a bit of our time.

Thanks ganstaman...

Message:
... in a p.m. to me it has been suggested also that this can also happen when players are trying to hook up together. I suppose we might have done the same in this "Great GKBrainblitz Day" event, but I just accepted what opponents came my way and hoped that maybe I would encounter someone more familiar. In any future Brainblitz event I don't think I would do different.
There are a lot "Blitz specialists" around in GK: people who have been around a while, maybe have played two or three "long" games (though often none at all) and just live on the site for Blitz play. Some of them are quite strong (though I admit I'm no great shakes at Blitz, myself).
Maybe a possibility that in some future development the Blitz section will allow for the creation of Blitz tournaments, with competitors chosen by invitation, maybe. Just a thought...
Cheers,
Ion
