Jones blew Van Wely off the board, Adams destroyed McNab, Sokolov took out Speelman, Wells lost his 5th nin a row, against a speculative opening piece sac by Werle and Timman endgamed L'Ami. Tomorrow we start at noon so the players can feast in the evening at the traditional Simpson's closing. BTW, there were no drug problems here, unlimited coffee waas supplied to the players throughout the event. So Mickey leads with 8-2 but plays Sokolov as Black tomorrow. Aug-18-07    Octavia: <he should get something like 4 rating> yes, it is sad that the grading system tempts people to avoid lower rated events. But on the whole, taking everything into account & weighing up the pros & cons, its quite a good system considering that millions of people get a good idea of where they're standing in the pecking order. When you ask someone about their grade, you must not be content with the actual number, but ask them what their % was over the year. The answer to that gives you an idea about the amount of pleasure they're getting out of the game. Aug-18-07    lostemperor: Michael Adams has won the tournament! Congratulations to him. We didn't manage to email Cessgames direct with the last round games in our rush to get to the closing dinner. It is near midnight here and I'm hours away from sobriety, so more tomorrow, but for now just a quick comment on Timman's "queen sac". He just missed th e alternative Kf2 and didn't think he had a choice. The tournament had a great fighting spirit with few draws. Mickey got the best game prize for his win over Werle. I'm off to a party tomorrow to celebrate his marriage and victory but will try to post some more comments. But what's that .. they have something like electronic timer devices. That's a curse. It is bad as it is if they had ordinary clocks instead of being able to explore the fascinating positions in depth without the pressure of time as in the golden days of chess... Personally, I don't like the DGT and will use other clocks next year. We will also use more of those new-fangled "electrical" lights. And many of the players will arrive via metal birds in the sky. Staunton would be amazed, but pleased! Aug-19-07    Eric Schiller: At the closing dinner (roast beef, Yorkshire pudding and abundant pourings of wine), sponsor Jan Moll was already talking about next year. Our hope is to raise enough money to get better lighting, live Internet broadcasts and Nigel Short, but we'll have to see how things go. I look forward to being back in London next year with all my friends here. Every one of the players is a great guy/gal and a joy to work with. There were no incidents at all and all of the spectators were well-behaved. For much of the tournament, you could hear a pin drop. The staff at Simpson's were superb, and we were never short of water, coffee, or biscuits (cookies). The post-mortems were fueled by excellent drinks in the bar. My only regret is that more of England's strong chessplayers didn't turn up, though Michael Stean and Mike Basman did turn up.
