vonKrolock: <12...♘g4> A spectacular image from this game, associated to this moment: Stolberg, at left, with a cigarette in the left hand, deliberate over his reaction to Keres' move, while this, at right, with the right hand in the forehead, keep concentrating on the game. The position over the board is not visible, as the table was on a stage, and the photographer, quite near, but taking the caption from below. The big mural board displays clearly the position after 12...♘g4, and Stolberg's clock is in motion, as the buttons indicate. But the actual position over the board maybe was not the same showed in the mural, as it seems that both black Knights are already out of play (the shadow of a doubt: were was Stolberg's Bishop took by Keres?! ) Another point - the second black Knight is near the 'g4' square, but if it was visible over the board, so would, for instance, both Kings, respectivelly in 'g1' and 'g8'...

Sergey Voronkov has written a wonderful series of in-depth articles on the first twelve USSR Championships on http://www.chesspro.ru . Although they are in Russian, I would strongly recommend their reading to anybody.

Aug-09-07  euripides: <trap> thanks - wonderful link.

If I get the Russian right, it says that Keres fell into a cunning <trap> in this game - presumably with 12....Ng4 -but that Stolberg later played inaccurately. 19.b3 doesn't look the classiest of moves.

<euripides>,
19.♕f3 looks a lot better.

I am not sure about 19.♕d4 ♖b4 20.♕a7 ♖fb8 - can the Queen be trapped?
