Advertisers Drop Imus Radio Program  »  From the Left
Objecting to his two week suspension on the grounds of free speech, conservatives were quick to point out that the “market will determine the fate” of radio personality Don Imus. For once, maybe conservatives are correct. The “market” is speaking and it’s saying “no” to Imus’ racism, sexism, homophobia and anti-Semitism. The Washington Post reports: Three major advertisers, office supply giant Staples Inc., Bigelow Tea and Procter & Gamble said late yesterday that they would stop placing ads on the show out of dismay over Imus’s comments. Any further defections could significantly erode economic support for a program heard in about 70 radio markets and simulcast on MSNBC television. Please ...

Anus in the Morning  »  From the Left
Nationally syndicated radio host, Don Imus, was suspended by WFAN’s parent company CBS Radio, for two weeks for making on-air racist remarks about the mostly African American Rutgers women’s basketball team. His radio program is simulcast on MSNBC television who also suspended the program for two weeks. The controversy erupted after Imus referred to the Rutgers University basketball women as, “some nappy headed hos.” This is not the first time Imus found himself in immersed in controversy for making racist, sexist, homophobic and anti-Semitic remarks. Here are a few examples of how the 66-year old radio personality views the world: • PBS’ Gwen Ifill, and a ...

White House Spins Anti-US Rallies in Iraq as “Freedom”  »  From the Left
The Bush White House on Monday downplayed anti-US rallies in Iraq led by radical Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr as a sign of freedom. Thousands of Shiites carrying Iraqi flags converged Monday in the holy city of Najaf as the war-torn country marked the fourth anniversary of the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime. Large crowds of men, women and children, holding flags and anti-US banners, gathered in Najaf and the nearby twin city of Kufa for the protest which is also seen as a show of strength for the cleric. ...

Bush Has Spent 409 Days at Crawford Pig Farm  »  From the Left
Bush has spent part or all of 409 days of his presidency at the 1,600 acre ranch - a former pig farm, in Crawford, TX, according to CBS White House correspondent Mark Knoller, who keeps meticulous records of Bush’s travel. Another way to look at this astounding vacation schedule is, Bush was sworn into office as president on January 20, 2001 - roughly 6 years and 3 months ago. Since that dark day, Bush has been on vacation one year and 44 days. It’s a schedule fit for any member of European royalty and one that would surely make even Queen Elizabeth flush with ...

Little Boots Throws a Tantrum  »  From the Left
As U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s highly productive trip to the Middle East draws to a close, we’re reminded of the puerile, immature nature of the current occupant of the White House. In a telephone call from Lisbon on Friday, Speaker Nancy Pelosi told the New York Times the following: She [Pelosi] could not account for the Bush administration’s assault, which she at one point equated to a tantrum. (She said her children were teasing her about Mr. Cheney’s accusation of bad behavior.) Defending her trip, Ms. Pelosi said that members of Congress had a responsibility to play a role in ...

Crazy John McCain Admits He’s Clueless  »  From the Left
U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said in an interview to be broadcast on Sunday he “misspoke” in his recent upbeat comments about security in Baghdad, where he traveled under heavy military protection. The Arizona senator, who is seeking the Republican presidential nomination, maintains progress has been made in the U.S.-led war in Iraq, according to comments to be aired on CBS’ “60 Minutes.” Excerpts include this bon mot: “Of course I am going to misspeak and I’ve done it on numerous occasions and I probably will do it in the future.” After McCain “misspoke,” the American netroots community, as well as Iraqi citizens, ridiculed ...

Report: U.S. to Attack Iran by End of April  »  From the Left
According to a report in the Kuwait-based Arab Times and carried in the Indo-Asian News Service, the U.S. is planning to attack Iran’s nuclear reactors and other nuclear facilities by the end of this month. Washington, sources say had started preparing a political speech to be delivered by U.S. president Bush later this month, announcing the military attack on Iran. Sounding very similar to the lead up to the invasion of Iraq, the speech will provide the ‘evidence’ and the ‘justification’ for the U.S. to resort to the military option after failing to persuade Tehran to give up its nuclear ambitions. According to the Arab Times, ...

DoD Report: No Ties Between Saddam and Al-Qaeda  »  From the Left
Vice President Dick Cheney is an established liar. While appearing on Rush Limbaugh’s radio program, he bloviated his tired allegation that al-Qaeda was operating inside Iraq “before we ever launched” the war, under the direction of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. “This is al-Qaeda operating in Iraq,” Cheney told Limbaugh’s listeners. But a newly declassified Defense Department report released yesterday contradicts the truth-challenged Cheney. The report says Saddam Hussein’s regime was not directly cooperating with al-Qaeda before the U.S. invasion of Iraq. The declassified version of the report, by acting Inspector General Thomas F. Gimble, also contains new details about the intelligence community’s prewar consensus that the Iraqi government ...

America’s Broken-Down Army  »  From the Left
TIME, Inc. has a good piece about the sad state of America’s army and how the Bush administration has effectively driven it into the ground. Here are a few highlights: The Army’s rush to carry out President George W. Bush’s order to send thousands of additional troops more quickly to Iraq is forcing two of the five new brigades bound for the war to skip standard training at Fort Irwin, Calif. These soldiers aren’t getting the benefit of participating in war games on the wide Mojave Desert, where gun-jamming sand and faux insurgents closely resemble conditions in Iraq. “Given the new policy ...

Nancy Pelosi’s Middle East Miracle  »  From the Left
Nancy Pelosi, the recently elected Democratic Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, arrived in Damascus, the capital of Syria on Tuesday, April 3rd, for a controversial visit that is seen as part of an attempt to sway American policy in the Middle East. 72 hours later, Pelosi accomplished what the Bush administration failed to achieve in after nearly 7 years in office: assurances from Syrian President Bashar al-Assad that he is ready for peace talks with Israel. Pelosi, the third most senior US official, held talks with Mr Assad at his hilltop palace overlooking Damascus. She said the delegation gave the Syrian ...

Americans Nervous about U.S. Foreign Policy  »  From the Left
Americans are expressing growing nervousness about their country’s foreign policy under George W. Bush, according to a recent survey, with about two-thirds saying relations with the rest of the world are on the wrong track. The poll, completed in March, found that public pessimism extends beyond the war in Iraq. More than eight in 10 respondents said they were worried about the way things are going for the United States in world affairs. Three quarters of Americans also said they worry about global warming, up from two-thirds percent in September 2006. Other findings include: • 82 percent say the world is becoming more ...

It’s Official: America Loves Barack Obama!  »  From the Left
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama campaigned in Mason City tonight, hours after announcing he had raised $25 million so far for his bid for the White House — slightly more than rival Hillary Clinton raised for the primary campaign. RadioIOWA reports: “A lot of the media has been focusing on the fact that we raised a lot of money in this campaign, and they’re stunned,” Obama said.  ”They say: ‘How did this guy named Obama who hasn’t been in Washington that long — how did he raise that money?’” Obama bragged about refusing to accept donations from political action committees or from registered lobbyists. Obama also ...

Liberal Media Bias? Where?  »  From the Left
What do these two pictures have in common? At first glance, very little. Two high-profile American women wearing veils. The picture on the left is Speaker Nancy Pelosi during her current trip to Syria. The picture on the right is First Lady Laura Bush during a trip to Israel. Veils are worn to cover the hair by many women in Middle East countries. Both Pelosi and Bush were demonstrating respect for the traditions of their host nation. So then why has Speaker Nancy Pelosi come for ridicule and criticism by the media for wearing a veil in Syria but Laura Bush was never singled out in this ...

Iran to Release 15 British Hostages: U.S. Bombing May Begin  »  From the Left
Iran’s President Ahmadinejad said today he would immediately release 15 British sailors and marines who have been held captive in Iran since being captures in disputed waters in the Persian Gulf. Iran claims they illegally entered Iranian territorial waters on March 23rd. “Our government has pardoned them, it is a gift from our people” he said. “It has nothing to do with this analysis. If we were to move forward on that basis things would have looked different. We approached the subject on a humanitarian basis. It was a unilateral decision on our end.” British Prime Minister Tony Blair played his hand ...

How Bogus Letter Became a Case for War  »  From the Left
“The British Government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa.” - President George Bush The uranium claim. The image of a nuclear mushroom cloud over New York or Los Angeles, would become a critical justification by the Bush neocons for the invasion of Iraq and the toppling of Saddam Hussein.  But when invading U.S. troops found no nuclear program, those now infamous 16 words and how they came to be in Bush’s speech became a focus for antiwar critics around the world. The Bush White House had manipulated the facts to take the United States to war — a crime in itself. Harry Reid: “America Cannot Afford Bush Strategy Any Longer”  »  From the Left
Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid, released the following statement today after comments made by President Bush at the White House: The President today asked the American people to trust him as he continues to follow the same failed strategy that has drawn our troops further into an intractable civil war. The President’s policies have failed and his escalation endangers our troops and hurts our national security. Neither our troops nor the American people can afford this strategy any longer. Democrats will send President Bush a bill that gives our troops the resources they need and a strategy in Iraq worthy ...

Botched U.S. Raid Led to British Hostage Crisis  »  From the Left
File under what you won’t read in the New York Times, Washington Post or Los Angeles Times or see on ABC, CBS or NBC. If you thought something felt suspicious about the 15 British sailors seized by Iran had the aroma of the Bush administration written all over it, then you were correct. The U.K. Independent reports: A failed American attempt to abduct two senior Iranian security officers on an official visit to northern Iraq was the starting pistol for a crisis that 10 weeks later led to Iranians seizing 15 British sailors and Marines. Early on the morning of 11 January, ...
