Smurf History Lesson: Who was Paul Revere? Paul Revere (1734-1818) was a famous messenger and American patriot of the American Revolution in 1775. As a supporter of the colonists, he was responsible for warning that the British soldiers were coming and that Samuel Adams and John Hancock should flee the area. Revere signaled the British approach by placing two lanterns in Boston's Old North Church steeple conveying the message, "One if by land and two if by sea." His actions resulted in the Minutemen's advance preparation for the Battle of Lexington and the start of the American Revolution - and America's eventual freedom from British tyranny.

Smurf History Lesson: Who was Benjamin Franklin? Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) is one of America's founding fathers. Cited as one of the great inventors of our time, Benjamin Franklin has been credited with many inventions such as bifocals, the Franklin Stove, glass Armonica musical instrument and most notably the lightning rod. His famous electricity experiment involved a kite, a key and lightening. The story is told that he tied a key to a kite string, flew it in a thunderstorm, and waited for the kite to be struck by lightning. Although the details of this legend are not clear, it is known that Franklin's experiment successfully showed that lightning was actually static electricity. He then used this knowledge for fire prevention (a serious concern for the 1700s), thus creating the lightning rod. He is also distinguished by his witty axioms from his numerous writings. For example, he coined the term, "A penny saved is a penny earned". Some other of his famous sayings include, "Three may keep a secret, if two of them are dead", "He that lieth down with Dogs, shall rise up with Fleas" and "... in the world nothing can be said to be certain except death and taxes".
