PSP Release Postponed in Europe
3/15/2005 at 12:19 AM

Is Sony still on track for North America?

Last Friday, many Europeans took much delight in touching their brand new Nintendo DS handhelds. This launch date gave it a distinct advantage over its only serious competition (Nokia need not apply), as Sony was set to ship its PSP two weeks later. Even with this delay, it was expected European gamers could keep their trousers on and wait a couple weeks, therefore giving each and every impartial man and woman a fair choice between the two systems.

Those who were vying for Sony to finally come through and deliver on their first shot at the handheld market will be disgruntled to hear Georges Fornay, chief of Sony Computer Entertainment France, confirm the unit's delay, with its release being postponed "for several months." This is supposedly so that Sony can sufficiently ship enough PSPs to satisfy the expectedly overwhelming European consumer demand.

The moment most of you have been waiting for has come: Sony's promise of one million PSPs for its March 24 launch date in North America stays intact. So, no need to worry, just be sure to have your cash on hand in case the lines get long.

Our Comments
Cyrus Baetz: The Japanese couldn't care less, they got their PSPs on December 12 of 2004. It's a shame Sony can't meet the apparent consumer quota, but they may lose many of those on the fence to Nintendo's more timely hardware. We all know how impatient those Europeans are!
