Splinter Cell Chaos Theory Available Today

Pick up a copy of Sam Fisher's most elaborate adventure yet on the Xbox, GameCube, PlayStation 2, and PC.

Three days ago, publisher-developer Ubisoft announced it had shipped Splinter Cell Chaos Theory to retailers. Today, it is available for purchase on the Xbox, GameCube, PlayStation 2, and PC. Just last week, a somewhat different version was released for the Nokia N-Gage.

Based on Tom Clancy's novels, Chaos Theory is the third entry in the Splinter Cell series, which follows the governmental exploits of superspy Sam Fisher. This time around, only two years into the future, Fisher is sent all over the globe, eventually assigned to prevent the Orient from turning against each other.

Splinter Cell has been compared more than once to the Metal Gear Solid series, most obviously due to its stealth-centric gameplay. The player can choose whether to progress through the game with a hostile approach, or go the quieter route, even avoiding confrontation altogether. The new game has plenty of new moves to compliment it, with the PlayStation 2 version nabbing an exclusive water-suffocation kill, included last-second by Ubisoft Montreal.

For those of you who want to play with a pal, you'll likely be appeased to know the two-on-two spies-versus-mercs mode has returned, along with a brand-new cooperative which enables you and a buddy to sneak around in seperate campaigns. This can be done via split-screen, and online with Xbox Live or PlayStation 2 Online.

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory is available at a retailer near you today, March 31. It is rated "M" for Mature and has a suggested retail price of $49.99.

Our Comments
Cyrus Baetz: We've played all different versions of Chaos Theory, and while they all have their ups and downs (but mostly ups), the Xbox and PC games have the upper hand in a number of areas. Regardless, the latest Splinter Cell game is worth a rental, if not a purchase for anyone familiar and fond of the series.
