Spore Set to Spread to PC

Will Wright to kick Peter Molyneux square in the nads.

This morning, The Sims creator Will Wright gave a speech at the 2005 Game Developer's Conference called "The Future of Content in Games." This gave him a great opportunity to talk up his most recent project, a PC-exclusive game titled Spore.

From what Wright has revealed, Spore is aiming for a level of grandeur never attempted before; its ambition and scale is unprecedented. He explains how he is trying to excel customization, instead providing the player with pure control.

It begins with a monocelluar organism in a tidal pool, and each creature evolves independently as the player advances it with his or her own sense of subjectivity, in what is called the tidepool phase. Once mastered, the player graduates to increasingly complex phases. Chronologically, these levels are: Tidepool, Evolution, Tribal, City, Civ (civilization), and finally an enourmous, endless imperialistic stage called Invasion.

Wright said he cannot detail this ambitious title any further, but more juicy news will surface at, and possibly before, E3 in May. Electronic Arts will develop and publish Spore, which will feature online play.

Our Comments
Cyrus Baetz: If Wright's ambitions become self-deluded, the project could fall apart - especially with such an intricate online system. But he has a good creative record and a great reputation, so if Spore stays on track, it could be unlike anything the gaming world has seen.
