NVBackup v1.18

Size: 117 KB
Date: February 20, 2007 (Updated)
Type: Freeware
Requirements:
  • Any hardware
  • Any OS
Download:
  • NVBackup118binaries.zip

Author: Alex Pruss software
Email: n/a

Description:
NV Backup is a free, thorough and easy-to-use backup / restore solution for newer Palms: Treo 650, T5, TX, LifeDrive and TE2. It will not work on older devices.

NVBackup is free and may only be used AT YOUR OWN RISK WITH NO WARRANTY AT ALL.

It uses a different (undocumented) method for accessing data that theoretically should make it be more reliable than commercial backup programs on crash-prone newer PDAs (e.g., ones unstable because of incompatible third party software or buggy operating system).

Features:

  • Daily (or nightly) scheduling of backups.
  • Backs data up directly from the internal non-volatile memory. This should prevent crashes that may happen with other backup programs.
  • Does not require a hard or warm reset before restoring data.
  • Precise restore of saved state.
  • Compresses and checksums backup data.
  • Fast update mode that replaces backed up files changed since last backup.
  • Selective restore function to restore one or more specific databases from a backup set.
  • Full source code available under BSD license (i.e., unlimited commercial use permitted, though I would appreciate being told about what use you make of it).
Update Description:
v1.18:
- Possibly more reliable screen-off.

v1.17:
- One-handed navigation in main screen.
- Possibly more reliable restore.
Recommendation: Disable the screen-off option.

v1.14:
- Added notification of failed backups.

v1.12:
- Should be able to do a scheduled back up of locked device without the need for NVBackup to store your system password
- Added security and OS upgrade warnings--see readme.txt

v1.10:
- Encryption
- Ftp server support for saving backups
- Time server support for setting time from atomic clocks
- Ability to automatically enter password to do scheduled backups on locked device (this may be a security hole)

I figured out what the bug was! i kept deleting the text files because i thought they were nonessential files, but they are there for a purpose!(my bad)perfect program!

Excellent program! very well designed. Only bug is that my scheduled backups won't stay 'cycle' meaning they won't self-delete, which requires manual deletion, or you end up with 20 backups. fix that irritating little bug, and it will be perfect. it saved me from about three hard resets so far!

You know the old saying ... "Nobody thinks about backups until after a catastrophe has already happened." Well, luckily I started thinking about backups a year ago, after my Treo 650 got into a really bad continuous-reboot situation which required a hard reset. I decided to find a backup program that would allow me to backup my Treo 650 to the memory card in the SD slot. After trying a few different programs, I decided to go with NVBackup. My reasons ... it is free, it supports the use of encryption, it was user-friendly, and it can perform scheduled backups. Well, tonight was the moment of truth. My phone got stuck in a continuous-reboot/freezing situation again. I had to "hard rest" the Treo. Using NVBackup's "selective restore" option, I was able to selectively restore small sets of files. Eventually, I was able to identify the one file that was causing the reboots. NVBackup saved the day. It works!

Excellent utility, hands down! Saved me a lot of time a couple of times after a hard reset on my T|X. One note, though: make sure you have a good SD card. when I first decided to give NVBackup a try, it didn't work, crapping out with some confusing error messages. I knew it had to be something with my Palm, because I read nothing but good reviews of the program. After a lot of troubleshooting, it turned out the problem was with the SD card (one of those cheapo no-name varieties). Ever since I upgraded to a 2GB Transcend, I haven't seen a single problem with this program. An absolute must have!

This is, by far, the best backup utility I've seen for ANY Palm OS device. I am running a Treo 650 with 5.4 and its set up for a full backup every day at 5am... and it hasn't missed a beat in months of use. Home run guy!

It's the bomb. From a long time palm user this shouldn't be free. Thanks

Excellent program!!! You requested that we update you as to the recovery on the 700p. Well, I have used it at least 4 times now. The recorvery works, GREAT! No issue, yet, hopefully none will appear. Awesome app for the price!

Wow , there is some genius in this software , EEExcellent Alex ! Works perfectly on my Treo 650 Bell mobility.I was a bit afraid because of the untested status and warning cautions , finally plunged...success! Even if my Os is in french. After copying the backup sets to the computer = you can see all those files that make the phone runs...real spy. The best = free.

Worked freat on my T|E2 until I installed Dmitry Grinberg's E2 Internal Drive ( http://www.palmpowerups.com/modules.php?name=Downloads&d;_op=viewdownload&cid;=2 ) as I wanted an internal driuve like the T|T5. Since then the program exits as soon as I start a backup with a message to the effect that it cannot find the internal drive. Please e-mail me if you require a screenshot.

Works great on my T|E2. Onlyu anoying thing is that is will not auto-backup if Key Guard is on.

I couldn't find backup software i would be satisified with so i planned to write my own one. now i don't jave to, nvbackup has almost everything i wanted and much more. but i still miss one feature. it would be nice if i could set nvbackup to backup immediately after i quit some application, preferably to backup not all files but only ones which belong to this application.... is there chance you would add this option?

Outstanding backup utility. Works perfectly on my Tungsten E2. The interface is clean and simple as all PalmOS apps should be. Don't get me wrong, this app is quite robust and full-featured. My only suggestion would be to add incremental backups over a selectable number of days. This app is #1 on my MUST HAVE list and unless you don't care about your data it should be on your list too!

Works excellent on my T5. I dind't have any crashes since I started to use it. It nearly replaces other commercial backup solutions but it can't backup the T5's internal drive as RescoBackup can. Alex Rollo: It CAN'T work on your TT because it doesn't have NVFS!

Wish there was another catagory called 'untested' because this app is just the very thing I've been looking for but it doesn't work on my Tungsten T.
