BB betting 'to hit six figures'

17 August 2007

William Hill was anticipating six-figure betting in 12 hours ahead of this week's Big Brother eviction.

The bookmaker expressed its delight that punters have finally been given something worth betting on.

And spokesperson Rupert Adams added that this is the first eviction in 20 not to be a one-horse race.

"This time round you can make a case for the top four in the market and the early signs are that this week's eviction will be the biggest turnover in Big Brother betting history," he explained.

The four most likely to leave this week are Kara, Gerry, Carole and Jonty, according to William Hill.

Liam and Brian remain the outsiders for eviction at odds of 50/1 each.

However, Brian's chances of winning the show outright are beginning to fade, it seems, with twins Sam and Amanda now tipped for victory.

Following their decision to be treated as a single person, they are now the only housemate to be odds-on for the prize at 5/6, while Brian has slipped to 6/5.

Stock market crash 'could impact economy'

17 August 2007

The stock market turbulence could spill over into the economy as a whole, it has been warned.

Manager of the F&C UK Growth & Income Fund Ted Scott predicts more heavy weather for investors in coming weeks.

"The All Share Index has fallen around ten per cent since mid-July, a move of a similar magnitude to the correction in May last year," he notes.

"Given the record levels of indebtedness, consumers will now wish to rebuild their savings, particularly if unemployment starts to rise."

This could lead to a reduction in consumer spending across the rest of the economy, he advises.

Meanwhile, investment firm Edward Jones urges clients to prepare their portfolios for further declines in the FTSE.

The company states that day-to-day turbulence is inevitable, with aggressive investments likely to fall more severely.

But a long-term approach could see a return of six per cent annually over the coming years, it is proposed.

PS2 games Review

17 August 2007

Alvin and the Chipmunks are coming to the PS2, it has been revealed. A new title featuring the long-term falsetto favourites is under development by Brash Entertainment. It is to challenge the player to a battle of the bands - called Rockathonapalooza - as Alvin, Simon and Theodore aim to assert themselves as the number one music act, bar none. Tracks spanning the ages are to be given the Chipmunk once-over, including songs by Elvis Presley and REM, as well as slightly more recent tunes by Run DMC and Blink 182. The game is expected to ship on December 4th, just in time for Christmas.

Also predicted for release during the holiday season is Fire Pro Wrestling Returns, previously available on the Game Boy Advance. The franchise was established in Japan in 1989 and this new instalment continues the tradition of setting the standard for others to follow, according to game publisher Agetec. The company adds that the title is frequently considered to be the best version yet among those who have played it. "We're doing everything we can to make sure the game is translated successfully without taking away one iota from the gameplay that's made this Fire Pro a fan favourite," states producer Mark Johnson.

Fatal Fury: Battle Archives Vol 1 has beaten both to the shelves as it shipped earlier this month, publisher SNK Playmore reveals. Comprising four variations from the early stages of the franchise's history, the title offers the chance to relive some classic arcade action on a next-generation console. Fatal Fury, Fatal Fury 2, Fatal Fury Special and Fatal Fury 3: Road to the Final Victory are the four incarnations to make an appearance in this compilation. SNK notes that the initial edition of the game was the first to include character movement along two axes, allowing opponent attacks to be dodged.

PC games Review

16 August 2007

Theatre of War is to hit the shops in October, according to game studio Kalypso Media. The title "distinguishes itself from the pack" of other war games available by focusing on realistic strategy and tactics with high levels of historical accuracy. Meanwhile, discipline and the ability to execute planned manoeuvres without varying from the brief is the order of the day if victory is to be assured. However, those looking for a "Rambo-esque experience" should look elsewhere if they expect all-out bloodshed, the software studio warns. Seasonal weather has also been programmed into the game to add an extra element which must be accounted for when planning attacks.

Strategy also plays a major role in Brass Hats, a head-to-head war game already available on the PC. This time, players take on the role of a Brass Hat - a high-ranking armed forces commander - and must coordinate infantry, tanks, biplanes and ships in a concerted effort to destroy the enemy threat. Single player mode is also available with 28 missions contributing to the overall campaign. Later chapters in the storyline offer a wider variety of units but also carry a greater demand for strategy and skill in order to quell the opposition.

A slightly more futuristic experience may be gained from Space Strike, set some 300 years into the future. The world of 2307 is somewhat different from our own, with human colonies on the moon and other planets under conversion to support mankind. But all is put at risk when a hostile force is detected - and the player must step in to eradicate the foe from five different environments in order to ensure humanity's survival. A range of adversaries is presented in land-based and airborne varieties, from fighter jets to biological insect-like craft.

DIY powertools Review

16 August 2007

While much DIY takes place in the home, Black & Decker has launched a new range of tools for motoring enthusiasts keen to do it themselves. The Simple Start Battery Booster is a handy unit for kicking some life back into a flat power cell. The firm advises that using the product could reduce the likelihood of something going wrong - such as the battery exploding or ejecting hot acid. Using the Battery Booster, power is supplied via the cigarette lighter over a recharge period of 15 minutes, meaning the driver may not even have to get out of the vehicle in order to get back on the road. A high-powered light is also included for roadside usage when all other lights go out.

Meanwhile, for enthusiasts who like to get under the bonnet, the BDV1084 and BDV1085 charging units operate in the traditional way, with crocodile clamps to attach to the terminals of the battery being charged. Black & Decker states that these models work two to three times faster than conventional chargers, with a safety feature preventing power being passed through the clamps unless they are properly engaged - again to eliminate explosions, Black & Decker suggests. A high-impact initial jolt promises to bring any battery up to 80 per cent of its initial level, with a subsequent slow charge providing the remaining input.

And for enthusiasts who find their passion for cars reaches into the twilight hours or on through the night, the Light Bar offers the ability to keep on working. The unit includes high-intensity light emitting diodes with cordless operation for use when no power socket is available. Hands-free operation is also provided for thanks to a swivel fitting which allows for the device to be attached to the bonnet of the car, leaving both hands free to carry out maintenance work on the engine.

Wireless networks Review

15 August 2007

D-Link has released a desktop widget to allow users of its Xtreme N router to monitor the performance of their wireless networks. The Yahoo! widget provides information such as the number of devices currently attached to the network and the security settings in force. The tool has been designed specifically to work with the Draft 802.11n Xtreme N Router, item number DIR-655, according to D-Link. "Computer users that understand the power available to them through our Xtreme N routers will be eager to use these tools to keep performance at its peak," predicts marketing director Daniel Kelley.

Meanwhile, the manufacturer recently launched the DES-1008P Power over Ethernet (PoE) Switch as a solution for wireless devices which need to be located remotely from a power source. The unit comes with a wall-mounting kit to eliminate the need for any desktop or floor space, while D-Link promises quiet operation for a discrete home or work environment. "The DES-1008P extends D-Link's impressive range of scalable PoE switches, which cater for Voice over Internet Protocol and wireless local area network users - without the hassle of additional power adapters, cords or AC outlets," explains Andrew Mulholland, UK marketing manager.

For a system with slightly greater requirements, a further PoE switch has been created by D-Link with support for up to 48 devices. The DES-3052P carries power across all 48 of its ports to assist in the creation of intricate wireless networks. For networks where unique IP addresses are at a premium, the stackable system can operate a "virtual stack" of up to 32 switches with a single IP. The manufacturer adds that users wishing to take advantage of the PoE capabilities with incompatible devices could use the D-Link DWL-P50 to allow power to be supplied to units without PoE abilities.

Toys and Gadgets Review

15 August 2007

When it comes to boy toys, a good wand is hard to beat. With the latest Harry Potter movie still in the cinemas and the final book in the series on the shelves, fans looking to prolong the storyline in their own imagination may wish to indulge in a replica of the boy wizard's magic wand. The Harry Potter Replica Wand from the Noble Collection measures 14 inches in length and has been designed to imitate the original as far as possible - even down to its packaging, which is a reproduction of the Ollivanders wand box mentioned in the tales themselves.

Those who like to take on the role of the underdog could prefer to obtain Ron Weasley's wand instead. Also part of the Noble Collection, this could stand alongside Harry's wand - just as their owners so often stand side-by-side in the stories - as part of a larger collection. Or it could simply allow Ron fans to recreate their favourite scenes starring Harry's right-hand man. Packaging is again designed to reproduce the appearance of the original Ollivanders wrapping featured in the accounts of the heroes' adventures.

Meanwhile, for big kids who still demand a little magic from their wands, the MX-980 from Universal Remote Control promises a variety of functions packed into a single wand-like handset. Designed to operate home theatre systems, the control is capable of commanding anything from audiovisual processors to the firm's own MSC-400 master system controller. An innovative feature allows custom images to be transferred to the unit from a computer, so the on-screen icons for each supported device can be changed to reflect the owner's personal setup. A total of eight buttons are provided to allow shortcuts to commonly-used functions, while the universal serial bus connection means the operating system may be updated using freely-available software from the manufacturer.

Speakers Review

14 August 2007

Boston Acoustics has unveiled a range of new products recently as it aims to assert itself as a market leader in the home cinema speakers market. The chameleon-like SoundWare surround sound system has been designed to blend into the background of any room, with fascias available in three greyscale shades and four other colours - "just red", bamboo, espresso and a flesh-tone "natural". The shape of the units and their innovative internal mounting bracket mean they may fit flush to a wall, in a corner or free-standing at a 30 or 45 degree angle, the manufacturer claims.

The Horizon line of speakers, also from Boston Acoustics, is slightly more imposing with free-standing units, although for those seeking subtlety there are still bookshelf versions available. To complement most colour schemes, a variety of different-hued grilles is available. And the manufacturer promises that the speakers "sound as good as they look" with built-in amplifiers of up to 300 watts in power. The hard edge commonly found with consumer electronics has also been combated through a soft-touch paint finish and rubberised accents. "Boston Horizon series speakers complement the decor of any room and offer no-compromise audio excellence," the company states.

For the ultimate in understated audio, the TVee Model Two provides a single soundbar which mounts above or below a flat-panel display. A subwoofer is also included to reproduce the bass signal, with wireless technology allowing for it to be placed in the recommended position - a corner of the room - without lengthy trailing wires leading back to the base unit. The only wire required - other than the mains supply - is a single audio cable connecting the TV's output to the soundbar itself, Boston Acoustics advises. The model is expected to begin shipping in September 2007.

Vacuum cleaners Review

14 August 2007

LG's VFA282FTW is a Best Buy, according to consumer watchdog Which? in a recent review. The bagless upright weighs in at 10.6 kg, meaning it should not be too cumbersome for most applications, while a maximum capacity of 1.8 litres means the unit need not be emptied too often during large-scale cleaning processes. And there should also be little need to continually switch electrical socket or drag heavy-duty extension leads behind, as the included power cable has a reach of 9.5 m - meaning an area of more than 280 sq m may be covered.

A slightly more compact option may be the Karcher Bee, a charismatic high-volume unit in eye-catching black and yellow. With a maximum capacity of seven litres, the device should last almost four times as long as the LG model before needing to be emptied. Its 2 m suction hose is flexible for hard-to-reach areas, while a crevice tool is carried on the casing for easy access. When simply vacuuming the floor, a simple switch mechanism extends brushes for hard wood or tiled surfaces, which may be retracted when cleaning carpeted floors. This end - like the crevice tool - has its own storage space on the base unit to reduce the likelihood that it may be lost.

Technophiles may prefer to opt for the autonomous robotic cleaning power of the Karcher RC3000. Still adorned in bright yellow and shades of black and dark grey, this unit eliminates the need for user input, cleaning for a set period of time before returning automatically to its base unit to recharge and empty its dust container. Additional automated features include an awareness of walls and stairs - including from above, to prevent falls - and dust sensors to decide how intensively to clean the surface beneath the unit.

Memory cards Review

13 August 2007

PNY has announced the launch of its 4-in-1 Mobile Media Reader Kit. This integrated device promises to allow the bearer to convert the included microSD card for operation as a miniSD, standard SD or universal serial bus (USB) memory storage device. This is achieved through a range of snap-on casings which increase the size of the card, as well as applying the necessary conversion of its connection points. Senior marketing manager Dean Delserro suggests that the product could be used to allow files to be shared between devices which usually require different memory formats, such as digital cameras and photo frames, or for transferring via USB media files for playback on an mp3 player which accepts SD cards.

The manufacturer also produces traditional memory cards in each format, including a 1 Gb SD card. This is suitable for use in temperatures ranging from freezing point to 55 degrees C, the firm suggests, as well as being able to be stored at anywhere from -20 to 65 degrees C. Writing may be achieved at up to 5 MB per second, meaning the card may be filled to capacity in about three minutes and 20 seconds. Reading data back from the device is even faster at 9 MB per second - less than two minutes to retrieve a card-full of information.

For those who prefer to use a USB drive to carry their files around, the Attache Pro 1 Gb USB2.0 Flash Drive is a stylish option with transfer speeds in excess of those achievable by the SD card. A maximum write speed of 17 MB per second is attainable, with reading again faster at 29 MB per second. PNY adds that the Carry It Easy software included with the product means files may be password-encrypted to increase security during transit.
