Toys and Gadgets Review 15 August 2007
When it comes to boy toys, a good wand is hard to beat. With the latest Harry Potter movie still in the cinemas and the final book in the series on the shelves, fans looking to prolong the storyline in their own imagination may wish to indulge in a replica of the boy wizard's magic wand. The Harry Potter Replica Wand from the Noble Collection measures 14 inches in length and has been designed to imitate the original as far as possible - even down to its packaging, which is a reproduction of the Ollivanders wand box mentioned in the tales themselves.
Those who like to take on the role of the underdog could prefer to obtain Ron Weasley's wand instead. Also part of the Noble Collection, this could stand alongside Harry's wand - just as their owners so often stand side-by-side in the stories - as part of a larger collection. Or it could simply allow Ron fans to recreate their favourite scenes starring Harry's right-hand man. Packaging is again designed to reproduce the appearance of the original Ollivanders wrapping featured in the accounts of the heroes' adventures.
Meanwhile, for big kids who still demand a little magic from their wands, the MX-980 from Universal Remote Control promises a variety of functions packed into a single wand-like handset. Designed to operate home theatre systems, the control is capable of commanding anything from audiovisual processors to the firm's own MSC-400 master system controller. An innovative feature allows custom images to be transferred to the unit from a computer, so the on-screen icons for each supported device can be changed to reflect the owner's personal setup. A total of eight buttons are provided to allow shortcuts to commonly-used functions, while the universal serial bus connection means the operating system may be updated using freely-available software from the manufacturer. © Adfero Ltd | |
