The Chigorin Defense, by FM Martin Breutigam
04/26/01
This latest CD from Chessbase contains three separate databases on the
Chigorin defense, an opening which arises after 1.d4 d5 2.c4 Nc6. The
first of the three databases contains over 4000 complete games for
this opening with 83 games annotated. The second database contains
theory (in four separate hypertext documents), along with 93 annotated
games. The last of the three databases contains 20 training games with
multiple questions in each game (50+ questions all total). Most of the
games on the CD were played in the mid-80s on, and the material is
quite current and up to date. Like all Chessbase CDs, this one also
includes a copy of Chessbase lite and the crafty analysis engine, so
you don't need to own the full Chessbase database program in order
to use the CD.
The following variations are covered:
-
1.d4 d5 2.c4 Nc6 3.cxd5 Qxd5 then 4. Nf3 and e3
-
Variations after 1.d4 d5 2.c4 Nc6 3.cxd5 Qxd5 4.e3 e5 5.Nc3 Bb4
6.Bd2 Bxc3 7.Bxc3
-
1.d4 d5 2.c4 Nc6 3.Nc3 and 3...dxc4, ...Nf6, ...e5
-
Variations after 1.d4 d5 2.c4 Nc6 3.Nf3 Bg4
I don't have anything to compare this CD to, since I do not play
this opening. Clearly too, it would be cheeky for me to judge the
quality of the theoretical material on this disk. The author is a FM,
and plays this opening, so I would assume he knows it reasonably well.
In the past, I have mentioned that database navigation could be
improved in some of the Chessbase tutorial CDs. I am happy to report
that this is the CD has a good number of navigation options for
getting around the hypertext. So I have to give my compliments to the
author for solving this problem.
The CD also has the advantage of being one of the few offerings out
there (either in electronic or in book form) that discusses the
Chigorin. So a little time spent with this CD could give you a nice
little surprise weapon for your next tournament.
