18.09.2001
– On September 11, 1995 New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani played the move 1.c4 to start the World Chess Championship match between Anand and Kasparov on the observation deck of the world Trade Center. Once the TV cameras were switched off, Anand corrected the move to 1.e4. "Wish we could do the same, switch off the TV screens and reverse what the barbarians have done," writes V. Krishnaswamy, who spent five weeks in the WTC, looks back in sorrow at the 1995 match in his
India Chess Diary.

Why nyet? – Keene replies to Kasparov
14.09.2001
– Garry Kasparov's agent Owen Williams had turned down the proposed Brain Games qualifier in Dortmund (see below), now BGN chairman Raymond Keene has answered in an open letter of his own, explaining that one of Kasparov's major objection, a two-game semifinal, has been changed to four games. A silicon bloodbath?
14.09.2001
– Kasparov Chess posed ten
question, Braingames answered, but the lads from Israel and New York are not satisfied. "They either avoided or misunderstood several items," writes Michael "Mig" Greengard. "In the Kasparov-Deep Blue the
machine's biggest advantage was that it was a complete unknown to Kasparov. Now, however, we've gone too far in the other direction..." Mig also shares our skepticism about Fischer playing on the Internet (below). You can read the KC article here...

Is Fischer playing on the Internet?
14.09.2001
– He won the world championship title in 1972, then retired to a hermit-like
existence of total obscurity. Now Bobby Fischer has been discovered
playing the game anonymously on the internet against fellow Grandmasters.
At least this is what Nigel Short thinks. After 50 games Short,
in a Telegraph
article, says he is "99 per cent sure" he has
been playing against the chess legend. Sorry, Nige, we believe the
mysterious Internet Fischer is a computer.

Machine event have replied to the ten questions posed on the
Kasparov
Chess web site. "The Bahrain rules were an attempt to
level the playing field," write BGN Match Director Raymond
Keene and Rules Commissioner Eric Schiller in a statement sent

may not be perfect, and are still making adjustments, but these
were our honest conclusions for a genuine test between man and
machine."

World Trade Center destroyed
12.09.2001
– Yesterday, in one of the most horrifying terrorist atrocities in history, the World Trade Center in New York was destroyed. We extend our deepest sympathies to the people of America. Our thoughts and feelings are with the victims and their families. The World Trade Center had a special meaning for chess. In 1995 the World Championship was staged on the Observation Deck on the 107th floor. We look back at in a
commemorative picture gallery.
