What is Blockading? Part 2 of 4

Submitted by ChessDweeb on Sun, 07/29/2007 at 4:36pm.

In the last article I gave an example of what blockading is. Now, I will write about the sister of blockading named restraining. The first step is to restrain a pawn from advancing. If you think about it, this makes sense. It's a lot easier to attack a target that can't move compared to one that can.

Keep in mind that restraining doesn't mean the same as blockade. By restraining we do something that stops the pawn's advance. If blockading is possible, it's usually better because it's like a wall. See the diagram below for an example of restraining:

In the next part I will show you how to ATTACK and kill the d pawn that we have restrained. Get ready for Part 3 of 4, the attack. Part 4 will be about which pieces make good blockaders and why.

Sure, but the d-pawn is an easy target if you know how to attack and kill it. Then the game is decisive because white is a pawn up and black has doubled pawns. Black's king is out of play and can not stop white's b or c pawn from queening. The black d-pawn stands alone and therefore is black's losing weakness. As for the knoght reaking havoc, if it moves away the b anc c pawns of white will just advance easily.
