(Last update: September 2006) If you want to buy an analog chess clock, shop carefully. Contrary to what some people say, analog clocks are still popular and you'll find competitive pricing online. Here we list six manufacturers alphabetically. You can find online retailers by following the Products / Shopping link on the left. Premium models cost $75 and up, while Budget models can be found for $35 and less.

Aradora

Sold in both plastic and wood cases, these clocks are sturdy and have a large clock face which is easy to view. The large toggle bar is quiet and has a locking device for storage. It comes in four colors : black, white, red, and blue. Made in Romania.

BHB (Turnier)

The BHB is a popular clock that many players consider to be the standard. Sometimes called 'BHB Turnier' or simply 'Turnier'. It comes in normal (60 minute face) and blitz (20 minute) models. The plastic models are available in many colors (Navy Blue, Emerald Green, Sky Blue, Crimson, etc.), while the wood models also come in several colors. Made in Germany.

Garde

This is a top quality wood clock also known as Ruhla. It has a large, clear face and has been used in world championship matches. Made in Germany, the correct spelling of the product name is Gardé.

INSA

This clock, in plastic and wood, was designed for the 29th Olympiad in Novi Sad, 1990. It has a large face with black on white artwork and large, quiet buttons. The flag is specially marked for blitz games. Made in Yugoslavia (Serbia).

Quartz

Unlike the other models listed here, these clocks are a technology, not a specific brand. They are battery powered, don't need winding, and are quieter than ticking clocks. It's not clear how many different models there are, but the best known, the Master Quartz, was manufactured by Seiko.

Rolland

There is a lot of confusion about the name on this one and it is sometimes listed as Roland, Rollan, and even Holland. Very similar to the BHB, but with a larger button, it comes in plastic and wood cases in a variety of colors. There are also tilt-back and blitz (20 minute) models. Made in Germany.

Hetman

(Added September 2005) Comes in three models: Classic, Modern, and Classic Blitz. The Classic model is similar to the BHB. Made in Poland.

"Made in China"

There are many models manufactured in China. Since we are limited in the number of models we can discuss in a single Before You Buy article, we added a new feature: Before You Buy a Chess Clock "Made in China".
