The United Nations at the centre of international policy-making

On the first day of his visit to the United Nations Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier's schedule featured a G8 foreign ministers meeting and talks on current developments in the Middle East. He also signed the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance.

Use of force against demonstrators condemned

For serveral days, protestors have been demonstrating against the military government of Myanmar. Worldwide, there is deep concern about a possible further escalation. In New York, the G8 foreign ministers voiced their strong concern and condemned any use of force against peaceful demonstrators.

Middle East: Education to overcome barriers to peace

Education can help overcome barriers to peace. This is the idea behind the initiative to set up a Centre for European Studies in Israel, a project involving the Royal Institute for Inter Faith Studies in Amman, the Al-Quds University in East Jerusalem and the Herzliya University in Israel. Germany has backed this joint Israeli-Jordanian-Palestinian initiative aimed at helping to broker Middle East peace through education.

Safe uranium enrichment under international supervision

In Germany the decision to phase out the use of nuclear power has already been taken. However, other countries intend to construct new nuclear power plants. For this they need guaranteed access to enriched uranium. But as uranium enrichment can also be used to build nuclear bombs, the proliferation of this technology must be restricted as much as possible. Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has put forward a solution.

Rethinking Transatlantic Relations

Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has promoted the idea of a new Transatlantic agenda. At the opening speech on "Transatlantic Dialogues" in the House of World Cultures in Berlin, he stressed that the key issues humanity will face in the next 100 years can only be successfully addressed together.
