Hero Camp last Thursday offered WarCry the chance to sit down and play Gods and Heroes: Rome Rising and then interview Perpetual Entertainment President and Co-Founder Chris McKibbin about the game. We file this hands-on preview:

image"The majority of people who play MMOs have never raided," Perpetual President and Co-Founder Chris McKibbin explained. The sometimes absurd time commitment of raids is why. In World of Warcraft, players need to spend hours organizing dozens of real people. For anyone outside the hardcore, that means high-end raids are a wealth of content that they simply cannot hope to experience. Gods and Heroes turns that dynamic on its ear with its minion system, where a single player can represent six characters on the screen. The result is that a simple five man group can experience raid content in Gods and Heroes, a development that severely cuts into the organizational time required for that kind of epic content.

A study on CBC News also peeked at the effect of violent "M-rated" games on youth. In this study, the authors found that while a large number of kids had played this kind of game, they did not report adverse social effects that some pundits attribute to violent games.

"Violent game play is so common, and youth crime has actually declined, so most kids who play these games occasionally are probably doing fine," says Cheryl K. Olson, ScD, co-director of the Center for Mental Health and Media.

"We hope that this study is a first step toward reframing the debate from 'violent games are terrible and destroying society' to 'what types of game content might be harmful to what types of kids, in what situations.' We need to take a fresh look at what types of rules or policies make sense."

Yahoo! News has an article on a recent study that suggests video games cut into children's reading and study time. This is no great shock, since simple math says that if someone is doing one thing, they're not doing the other. However, it is interesting to note that socially they found no difference in the level of involvement of heavy gamers vs. non-gamers.

"Gamers did spend less time reading and doing homework. But they didn't spend less time interacting with their parents or their friends, nor did they spend less time in sports or active leisure activities," said Hope Cummings of the University of Michigan, whose study appears in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.

The study comes as U.S. doctors voice growing concern about the long-term effects of video games.

Sanya Weathers (née Thomas) is now the Community Director for internet start-up GuildCafe.com according to a post on the company's official website and confirmed by Weathers herself. Weathers had previously served as the Director of Community Relations for EA Mythic on Warhammer Online and Dark Age of Camelot. It is unclear at this time what exactly she will do - besides of course directing community - but she is definitely now firmly outside the game development space.

The announcement on their site was rather simple:

Sanya Weathers of DAOC, UO and WAR community management fame has joined GuildCafe as Community Director.

WarCry had originally broken the story of her departure and interviewed her on it, an article you can find here.

Runescape developer Jagex put out a curious little press release about their study that says it helps young people to play in massively multiplayer worlds. Obviously, they're hardly an uninterested party, but it's good to see people doing some reverse spin.

"Reakktor Media, developer of the Cyberpunk Sci-Fi MMORPG "Neocron 2" announces the discontinuation of the service to transfer old Neocron 1 characters to Neocron 2 game accounts within the next weeks. It will then no longer be possible to connect Neocron 1 with Neocron 2 accounts in order to transfer characters. Players, who would like to have their characters transferred by then, can request a linkage by sending an e-mail including the full name, address and Neocron 1 and Neocron 2 account names to account@neocron.com."

On September 1st, 2007 NCSoft will officially close the Auto Assault servers. The news hit the community hard today as this post-apocalyptic car MMO meets an end shared by games like Earth and Beyond. It's rare for an MMO to shut down, but unfortunately for fans of the game, NCSoft just didn't see it as good business sense.

"After a while it gets to the point where the return we're getting on what we're putting into it is just not matching up," NCSoft Director of Public Relations David Swofford told WarCry after the news hit. "We just didn't have that many people in the service."

According to Swofford, NCSoft owns the Auto Assault intellectual property. If that does not change before September 1st, there is no legal way that the game can continue on. However, hope may not be gone. A few years ago, NetDevil opted to run their niche space MMO Jumpgate themselves after it found only a moderate audience.

Swofford told us that no one at NCSoft will lose their jobs as a result of this move. He was unable to comment on what chances the game might have of being sold back to NetDevil and would only say that at this time they plan to close the game on September 1st and that is all.

NetDevil could not be reached for comment at the time of publish.
