Pay Directly from Your Bank Account

If you have an ACH-enabled U.S. bank account, you can pay online for goods and services purchased on Amazon.com without having to mail in a physical check. The option to "Pay directly from your bank account" will be presented as a payment option during the checkout process if you place your order through the Shopping Cart.

Getting started:

Making purchases:

What information do I need to provide?

In order to add "Pay directly from your bank account" as a payment option, you will be asked to supply:

  • the bank routing number (also known as the ABA code)
  • the account number (the account must be an ACH-enabled checking account at a bank branch located in the U.S.; if you're unsure whether your account is ACH-enabled, please contact your bank)
  • the name and the address of the principal account holder
  • the principal account holder's valid U.S. driver's license number (or state-issued ID number) and the issuing state

Routing numbers are always 9 digits long. Account numbers may be up to 17 digits long. Some banks list the routing number first on the check, while other banks list the account number first. Below are examples of both types of checks:

We do not need a check number; Amazon.com will debit your bank account electronically and the bank does not require a check number for such transactions.

What is ACH?

The ACH (Automated Clearing house) network is an efficient, nationwide electronic funds transfer system that's widely used for online bill payment.

Is it safe to enter my checking account information online?

Yes, you can safely enter your information via our secure server, which encrypts all submitted information. To provide you with an additional layer of security, all account information provided to Amazon.com is stored on a computer that is not connected to the Internet. This computer is not accessible by network or modem, and the information is not stored anywhere else.

Can I provide my bank account details over the phone?

We're sorry, this option is not currently available.

Can I use any bank account? Can I use a company account, or an account at a U.S. branch of a foreign bank?

Yes, you can use any bank account (checking or savings) provided your account is a personal account located at a branch in the U.S. Although the principal account holder's billing address does not need to be in the U.S., the account holder must have a current U.S. driver's license or state-issued ID.

The account must be "ACH-enabled," meaning that the bank account can be debited electronically. Before submitting your bank account number to us, please contact your bank to confirm that your account is ACH-enabled..

We do not accept corporate or business bank accounts.

Can I use my Amazon Associate or Marketplace seller bank account to pay directly from my bank account?

Amazon Associates need to re-enter their bank account information to pay for orders directly from their bank account.

Active Marketplace sellers can set "Pay directly from your bank account" as a payment option without having to re-enter their bank account information.

What are the advantages of the option to "Pay directly from your bank account" instead of paper checks or credit/debit cards?

  • You can use this option to pay for a wider selection of items than you can currently buy from Amazon.com with a paper check or money order.
  • Your orders will arrive more quickly than if you pay with a check or money order, as we don't need to wait to receive your payment in the mail.
  • "Pay directly from your bank account" is very secure and you won't have to worry about lost or stolen checks.
  • There are no annual fees or finance charges that you might incur with credit cards.

Which items can I purchase with this payment method?

You can use this method to purchase any item on Amazon.com--including items sold by other sellers--except for the following:

  • Gift certificates
  • Amazon Prime membership
  • items sold by Eddie Bauer
Can I use 1-Click ordering and pay from my bank account?

Yes. Although it's not currently possible to designate a bank account as your default payment method for 1-Click orders, once you've clicked the "Buy Now with 1-Click" button you can click "Review and edit your 1-Click order" and change the payment method to a bank account. Note: this option appears only for items sold by Amazon.com. For items shipped by other sellers, you'll need to go into the order summary in Your Account and make the change there within 30 minutes after placing the order.

    When is my account debited?

Your bank account will be debited only after we send you a shipment. If an order cannot be completely fulfilled in a single shipment, your account will be debited only for the items that are shipped.

For more information, please read our Terms and Conditions.

What can I do if my payment is not authorized?

In the event that we have difficulty authorizing your bank account for payment before the order has shipped, Amazon.com will send you an e-mail with instructions for correcting the problem. If you did not receive or no longer have this e-mail, here's what you can do:

    1. Please go to Your Account and verify that the payment information and driver's license information you entered is correct. Also, be sure that a 10-digit phone number is listed on the billing address. (Note: you will only be able to view the last 2 digits of the bank account number.)
    2. If the information you entered is correct and a valid phone number is listed on the billing address, then the determination to decline your transaction was based on information provided by TeleCheck Services. Please call them toll-free at 1-800-366-2425 for more information. They can also help you resolve this problem.
    3. Alternatively, you may select another payment method for this order.

What happens if the transaction fails after my order has shipped?

If there are insufficient funds on your account, the account number was entered incorrectly, or the transaction fails for any other reason, your transaction will be sent to TRS Recovery Services for collection. TRS may telephone you regarding the transaction. You can contact TRS Recovery Services toll-free at 1-800-366-1049, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 7:00am to 9:00pm CT, or Saturday between the hours of 8:00am to 5:00pm CT. TRS will assess a service fee on each failed transaction. Please be aware that if you use the automated phone service, TRS will asess an additional $11.95 charge; to avoid this charge, you may press 0 to speak with a TRS customer service agent.

What happens if I return an item or cancel an order?

Whenever you return an item, we issue a refund to the payment method used for the order--if you used your bank account to pay for the order, the refund would be credited to your bank account. Read more about refunds.

You can cancel an open order as long as no shipments have been processed. If you cancel an order, you account will not be debited at all. Learn how to cancel an order.

Can I use a credit card or gift certificate in combination with paying directly from my bank account?

No, payment cannot be split between a bank account and a gift certificate or credit card.
