By LIZ SMITH November 11, 2007 -- 'I HONOR 'real journalism,' which doesn't get clouded by false stories whether they're about me or any body else," said Angelina Jolie at the Courage in Journalism Awards in Beverly Hills.

So you see, occasionally something does happen on the West Coast that isn't about Britney, Nicole, Lindsay or Paris.

MERYL STREEP as Julia Childs? Nora Ephron is adapting the Julie Powell book "Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen." The saucy Ms. Ephron will also direct and - hooray! - the movie will be made in NYC in March. Amy Adams is to play the young Julie. And Meryl can drop the lamb roast as Julia!

THE LATEST in the Princess Diana inquest, which I assume we'll have with us unto the end of the world - the drinking chauffeur, Henri Paul, was seen taunting paparazzi outside the Ritz before the fatal crash. "He wanted to give wrong leads to photographers," says one witness.

When Diana and Dodi Fayed came out the back entrance, Henri Paul was seen waving to paparazzi and telling them not to bother following the Mercedes as they wouldn't be able to keep up. "Mr. Paul was trying to create an atmosphere of pressure and anticipation. He wanted to be center stage. I think it was his idea to create a diversion." The paparazzi in the Place Vendome at the front of the Ritz are said to "have panicked" when they realized their prey had left from the rear of the hotel.

APPLAUSE to Mary Tyler Moore, who has worked tire lessly for Juvenile Diabetes Reseach since 1984. She was given the "Humanitarian of the Year" award last night at the Waldorf, raising another $3 million.

Mary has just completed a movie of Peter Callahan's dark comedy "Against the Current," with co-stars Joseph Fiennes and Justin Kirk.

THIS WEEK, the Museum of the Moving Image saluted the 25-year-veteran Tom Cruise. The film clips they showed at Cipriani 42 St. proved what a multifaceted leading man and big star Tom is and what a good actor he can be. This was true right from that beginning stand-out stuff in "Risky Business." And Tom, with a haircut that fell down over his forehead in bangs, seemed to enjoy the outing; at least he was his ever-gracious self.
