Backgammon

Almost everybody has this game in their house ('cuz its on the back of their checkerboard) but most of us don't know how to play it.

We'll learn it in class - it is actually fun and not hard to play once you figure out which direction to go.

Chess & Checkers

For checkers and chess
it will be so much easier (on me) if the checker boards have numbered squares. Then I can explain strategy easier and the kids will be able to quickly locate the right spot on their boards.

This is how the boards need to be numbered:

Top left and lower right squares should be red.
The first left top black square will be Number 1

_1A|_1_|_2A|_2_|_3A|_3_|_4A|_4_|
_5_|_5B|_6_|_6B|_7_|_7B|_8_|_8B|
_9A|_9_|___|_10|___|_11|___|_12|
_13|___|_14|___|_15|___|_16|16B|
17A|_17|___|_18|___|_19|___|_20|
_21|___|_22|___|_23|___|_24|24B|
25A|_25|___|_26|___|_27|___|_28|
_29|___|_30|___|_31|___|_32|32B|

The A's and B's don't need to be marked.

How to number them. If you have an inexpensive cardboard checker board just write it in the corner of each square. If you have a nice board, circle stickers will work or number stickers - cheap ones that will eventually fall off on their own.

Checkers: Click below to play checkers on line.

CHESS
If you have a chessboard that doesn't come with your checkers it will be marked vertically 1 to 8 and horizontally a to h.

The key to becoming a master class chessplayer is practice. This site is the best I've found on line: http://www.academicchess.com/ .
