Anarchy Online's Game Director Craig 'Silirrion' Morrison addressed the community in his latest letter giving a very detailed and comprehensive rundown of the upcoming PVP changes for Update 17.8, complete with the full ranking titles:

As I mentioned in the last letter, one of the major changes in 17.8 will revolve around the process of replacing the PVP title system, and introducing separate rankings for solo and teaming PVP as well as a true dueling system with its own ranks as well for those that prefer that style of PVP as well. There are also some Notum Wars changes afoot that we will get to later on in this letter. So with this letter I'm going to explain in more detail exactly what is coming your way in this regard.

It's also a fairly lengthy letter this time out with a lot to cover on this subject so hopefully it illustrates the thoughts and efforts that are going into redefining the system.

Its that time again as WAR Community Rep James Nichols has posted the final update before beta relaunch.

It's that time again!

This final update before beta goes live includes some great information on the never before seen guild and social tools! In addition to more questions answered about changes to RvR and some great artwork from our cities team. Enjoy!

Waaagh! And well met!

Even though it's been about two months since we temporarily closed the Beta, it doesn't seem that long given how busy we've been. Time just flies when you're neck-deep in the chaos that is the building of WAR.

We'll start off this week's update with some interesting behind-the-scenes information from the Cities Team. This time around they'll walk you through some of the steps that go into building some of the wonderful bits of Altdorf, the Empire's capitol city.

Previews

At an event in San Francisco last week, WarCry had the chance to play Age of Conan's early game experience, some mid-level content and even got our teeth into arena PvP. We preview all of this and more.

The strongest part of the first few levels - and I would suspect the game in general - is that for the first time in a long time it feels like a world and not a guided trip through Disney Land. There are challenges and creatures along the way that have nothing to do with the mission at hand, and combat doesn't always wait for you to get ready. For example, right out of the tutorial, I started on a road that led down into the town. My goal was to gain access to that town, and had I wished I could have stuck to the path and got it done, but unlike so many games, there were not sheer cliffs to make sure I stayed on the rails. To my left, I saw a camp of bandits, way above my level and clearly not on my side. The simpleton that I am, I decided to fight them, and I even got one's head before they took me out. I died, but I had fun, and it had nothing to do with the mission at hand.

Auran's ex-game designer and producer, David Gillespie, made a post on his personal blog, Wide Open Spaces, about the whole Fury and Auran debacle. Gillespie expressed his sorrow for the studio he dedicated more than two years of his life for:

I remember hearing a long time ago (couldn't possibly remember the source) that the definition of insanity was doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. You can see it play out with major corporations who don't alter their strategies with changing markets, flying in the face of all the evidence presented to them, watching their consumer bases shrink in slow motion before them, unable or unwilling to make the turn before the iceberg collides.

I've just finished watching it play out at a company I used to work at, Auran, a game developer based in Brisbane, Australia. Those who played strategy games in the mid-90's probably came across their biggest hit, Dark Reign, which set the company up and garnered worldwide acclaim. Of course then the publisher Activision bank-rolled a start-up and took pretty much the entire development team away; it's safe to say things never really quite got back on track...
