(November 2004) Of the hundreds of chess books published every year, only a few are destined to become classics. Most of the recommendations in the About Chess Bibliography (see the link box in the upper right corner of this article) are recognized classics and have instructed countless players eager to improve their grasp of the royal game. If you're interested in buying a particular title, see Bibliography Prices (link box again), which will lead you to a list of merchants offering the book.

The number of great chess books far exceeds the number of references in our bibliography. If you're interested in other titles which are destined to become classics, you can't do much better than relying on the few that have won a Book of the Year award from a respected source. For a list of recent books which have received an important annual award, see Award Winners (link box).

Chess books that win awards from prestigious reviewers are generally for serious players who know, for example, the difference between the Najdorf and the Dragon Variations. If you're looking for an easier read, try one of these two titles which appeared in 2004.

Two older books are in the same easy-reading category. We mention these partly because Bobby Fischer has been so much in the news in 2004. Note that the Waitzkin book has little to do with Fischer himself.

Finally, if you're looking for a book which is guaranteed to raise your chess rating, you can't go wrong with one of the following. They are filled with tactical puzzles that will challenge you wherever and whenever you have a few moments to spare.

Don't overlook that all of our recommended titles -- bibliography, award winners, easy reading, and tactical puzzles -- make great gifts. With the holidays just around the corner, what are you waiting for?
