(November 2007) This is the fifth edition of our annual look at what's hot in the world of chess books. As in previous years, we identified chess titles on two bestseller lists and weighted them according to their rank on both lists.

Worth noting on our Top-11 list (one title is in two volumes) is the larger than usual number of books that we classify as non-instructional. The top three titles are all in this genre, as is David Shenk's 'Immortal Game', last year's top pick.

1. 'How Life Imitates Chess' by Garry Kasparov

'Making the Right Moves, from the Board to the Boardroom • Hailed by Time as one of 100 people who are transforming today's world, Garry Kasparov has taken the lessons he learned as a world champion chess player and applied them to his new career as political strategist. A highly sought-after business speaker, Kasparov explains how to use the tools of chess to become more successful in business -- and in life.' (from the back cover)

2. 'The Art of Learning' by Josh Waitzkin

'A Journey in the Pursuit of Excellence • Waitzkin was catapulted into a media whirlwind as a teenager when his father's book Searching for Bobby Fischer was made into a major motion picture. After dominating the scholastic chess world for ten years, Waitzkin expanded his horizons, taking on the martial art Tai Chi Chuan and ultimately earning the title of World Champion. How was he able to reach the pinnacle of two disciplines that on the surface seem so different? "I've come to realize that what I am best at is not Tai Chi, and it is not chess," he says. "What I am best at is the art of learning."' (from the back cover)

All the while, he grapples with the bizarre, confusing legacy of his own father, who haunts Hoffman's game and life.' (from the dust jacket)
