Behind Rogues and Scoundrels with Henry Stern
April 01, 2004

[ Behind Rogues and Scoundrels with Henry Stern ]The Star Wars: Trading Card Games continue to grow and expand to meet the needs of both beginner and advanced players. Rogues and Scoundrels is the seventh SWTCG set, and featuring over 105 new cards of both classic and expanded universe bounty hunters including Boba Fett, Bossk, IG-88, Zuckuss, the Black Sun droid assassin Guri, Imperial Agent Mara Jade, Black Sun crime lord Prince Xizor, and Dash Rendar.

Henry Stern, Lead Designer/Developer of the Star Wars: TCG series at Wizards of the Coast, answers questions about the latest card set: Rogues and Scoundrels.

Why will fans of theStar Wars card games love this new set? How is this set different than the other Star Wars card games?

Rogues and Scoundrels is unique in that it is the first set to heavily feature Neutral characters, ground units, and space units. One of the great things about the Star Wars universe are these shady characters that live on the edge of "normal" society. This set is dedicated to them.

What can players expect from the game? Any surprises?

Something else that is new in this set, is that we heavily explored much of the expanded Star Wars universe. That is, things that do not appear directly in the movie, but instead were created in books, comics, and video games based on Star Wars. For example, of course we have the all of the bounty hunters that appeared in The Empire Strikes Back. But, we also have all of their ships as well, and anyone who has read Tales of the Bounty Hunters will recognize them. Also, we used a lot of the characters from the popular Shadows of the Empire.

Is this the kind of game that beginners can also get into, and is it challenging enough for advanced players?

Rogues And Scoundrels is aimed at the more experienced SWTCG player. There are no starter decks, only booster packs. If a new player wants to learn the SWTCG we suggest starting with an Empire Strikes Back starter.

What prompted the decision to focus on Bounty Hunters?

As this was going to be the "Neutral set," focusing on the bounty hunters from Empire was a natural. They have always been some of my favorite characters in the Star Wars Universe, so we decided to also focus the two new mechanics of the set around Bounty Hunters as well.

What tips/tricks do you have for people playing this set?

Bounty hunters are tricky to play. Because of their upkeep cost, you can't play with a ton of bounty hunters in your deck. But playing with a few of them can be very profitable. If you do want use a lot of bounty hunters, look for ways to get around paying their upkeep costs. There are a few cards in the set (like C-3PO, and Xizor) that can help.

Any additional comments about Rogues and Scoundrels?

With every new set, we like to introduce new themes and mechanics, and hopefully enable new deck archetypes to exist. While at the same time providing cards that bolster existing strategies. I think that Rogues and Scoundrels does all of this and I hope you have as much fun exploring and playing with the new set as I did designing it!
