PS2 games Review

30 April 2008

A further three games are emerging on to the PS2 over the coming months, with scheduled release dates to coincide with the end of the summer. As the nights begin to draw in, the August launch of Madden NFL 09 may provide an alternative to those bemoaning the loss of long evenings in the setting sun. Developer EA Sports has revealed that those looking for the game on their local stores' shelves should expect to find former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre in pride of place on the cover. Inside the box, more than 85 features have been added, including an on-screen holographic environment which aims to educate the player about the skills needed to compete in the real-life sport.

In September, meanwhile, Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 3 is set to make an appearance on the platform. Featuring the "largest ever" selection of playable characters, this poses the task of fending off opponents throughout the course of 55 missions, set in and around the location of Hidden Leaf Village. Visually, the promise of a 3D-rendered environment could help to add to the realism, while purists may celebrate the fact that they can choose a Japanese voiceover, helping to enhance the traditional feel of the game. An English narrative is also available for those who cannot speak the language of the Far East.

Crash Bandicoot: Mind over Mutant may not have a specific date set as of yet, but developer Sierra anticipates that it should be ready some time in the autumn too. Set to appear on the PS2, versions are also to be released for the Nintendo DS, PSP, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. For the first time, players can get a taste of some girl power as Crash's sister appears as a controllable character. Coco is intended to offer the female of the species an on-screen incarnation to which they can relate more closely, while her treasure hunting abilities may well come in handy to gamers of either gender.

Energy efficient business PCs launched by HP

30 April 2008

Two new models of energy efficient business desktop computers have been unveiled by Hewlett-Packard (HP).

Business users may wish to opt for the HP Compaq dx2450 desktop system, which comes with a number of "high-end features" such as brand-name graphics cards and the ability to upgrade the amount of memory installed.

HP also offers the option of receiving the system with software applications already installed, helping to allow for out-of-the-box operation.

Meanwhile, the HP Compaq dc5850 business desktop PC offers an alternative with data mirroring facilitated using Raid technology.

This should help to minimise data loss should a hard drive fail at any point, HP suggests.

Alan Reed, vice-president and general manager of HP's personal systems group, says: "The depth and breadth of HP's product offerings are a testament to our commitment to provide technologies that solve our global customers' pain points."

Those concerned about the impact the delivery of their new computer system might have on the environment could welcome the recent revelation that HP has been granted permission by the US Environmental Protection Agency to display a logo on its packaging asserting the eco-friendliness of its distribution network.

PS3 games Review

29 April 2008

Another trilogy reaches its third instalment with the upcoming release of The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon on the PS3. Also available on PS2, Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360, the title sees the return of the plucky dragon for a star-studded third outing. Voice talents are set to be provided by Spyro stalwarts Elijah Wood and Gary Oldman, along with appearances from Wayne Brady, Mark Hamill and Christina Ricci. Those who are most familiar with the series are told to expect some advanced character design in this chapter, with software studio Sierra asserting that the fire-breathing hero has done plenty of growing up over the course of the three games.

The end of September is scheduled to bring with it the latest addition to one of console gaming's most atmospheric franchises as Silent Hill: Homecoming hits the PS3 and Xbox 360. Among the features making a return here is the composition of soundtrack music by Akira Yamaoka, which could help to continue the sense of foreboding felt in this chapter's predecessors. With all-new graphics, however, the visual experience is promised by developer Konami as being "like never before" as the village of Silent Hill comes to life again, populated by misshapen monsters and other such inhabitants.

Finally, the wait is over as Grand Theft Auto IV appears on the shelves today. In honour of the release, Sony has announced a special edition of the PS3 console which comes with a copy of the game, as well as a bundled wireless Sixaxis controller. Despite its title, GTA IV is actually the 11th instalment of the series, which typically includes the names of real or imaginary cities in place of an edition number. Previous appearances in the franchise have been made by Grand Theft Auto London, along with the more recent Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Samsung launches 'first of its kind' GX-20

29 April 2008

The first camera to make use of the new 14.6-megapixel complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensor developed jointly by Samsung and Pentax has now been launched.

Samsung unveiled the GX-20 on April 25th, aiming it at intermediary users of digital single lens reflex cameras.

Anyone planning on using their camera in exposed conditions may also like to give it a try, thanks to its waterproof exterior casing.

Samsung promises "spotless clean pictures" with a dual-stage system to eliminate dust.

A special coating on the CMOS sensor helps to prevent microscopic particles from being absorbed.

Following this, a shaking system helps to agitate any remaining dust in an attempt to make it simply drop off of the sensor.

The shaking image sensor also incorporates a function to correct any motion of the photographer's hand when the photograph is being taken, further enhancing the clarity of the achieved snap.

Samsung recently demonstrated the GX-20 as part of its "imagine perfect images" stand at the 2008 Photo Marketing Association conference.

PDAs Review

28 April 2008

The PDA market could be hotting up in the not-too-distant future as two familiar smartphone brands go head to head. Apple's iPhone has competition in the form of Research in Motion's BlackBerry range, reports the New York Times. The publication notes that smartphones constitute an increasing share of all mobile phone handsets sold, with the launch of iPhone boosting sales worldwide. Research in Motion is facing the challenge of making the transition from business-only devices to incorporating multimedia capabilities and more consumer-friendly features into its products as PDAs, mobile phones and media players converge into single all-encompassing units, the New York Times suggests.

Research in Motion may have taken the first step with the recent launch of its iPhoneBlackBerry Pearl 8110 smartphone. This incorporates a two-megapixel camera which is also suitable for filming video footage, a 3.5 mm headphone jack for personal playback of audio content and a memory card slot which may be accessed externally - eliminating the need to remove the external case of the phone. Satellite navigation is also catered for, with the manufacturer advising that the user may expect a colourful on-screen representation of the street they are on at each step along the calculated route, helping them to visualise the next turn, junction or roundabout more effectively.

Looking further into the future, a new technology may eventually be used in PDA batteries in light of some of the product recalls to have been made in the past. Some designs have seen lithium ion batteries overheat during charging when they are left attached to the mains after reaching full charge - an incidence which the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research ISC in Wuerzburg, Germany, claims to have overcome. The research facility has devised a battery built around a polymer from the Ormocer group of compounds, which scientists suggest should eliminate the risks posed by overcharging such devices.

Samsung adds to digital camera line-up

28 April 2008

Samsung has announced the latest in its digital cameras portfolio, with a number of new models making it on to the market.

The all-new NV24HD is the lead device, while the remaining three introductions are upgrades of the firm's NV40, NV30 and NV4 models.

Fashion-conscious users might welcome the fact that the NV4 is available in silver and black, as well as a more outstated pink version.

The camera is supplied in either stainless steel or lightweight titanium described by the firm as "bio-friendly".

A lightweight design is also promised of the NV30 and NV40, with each tipping the scales at less than 133 g.

But the flagship model is the high-definition NV24HD with 10.2-megapixel resolution, face detection and a wide-angle lens for close-up shooting.

Earlier this year, Samsung exhibited its digital cameras at the 84th annual Photo Marketing Association conference in Las Vegas under the slogan of "imagine perfect images".

GPS systems Review

25 April 2008

While GPS systems may be useful, some people could be looking to spice up theirs with some extra features. Archos may well have the necessary products to quench such a thirst with its combination of global positioning and multimedia playback available in the Archos 605. The device itself comes with multimedia capabilities as standard, but a new in-car cradle from the firm adds satellite navigation to its list of features. Archos adds that, as it is primarily a media device, its screen is twice the size of comparable pure-GPS products and its hard drive space may be up to 50 times as large as its counterparts.

For a more conventional GPS unit, however, TomTom may be among the more recognisable names in the industry. Motorcyclists are told by the firm that the new version of the TomTom Rider is now available with features which may be just the trick for meeting their needs. An improved user interface is included to make it easier to modify the route, while statistics are now provided on the trip once it is completed, telling the rider how far they are from home, how many miles they have covered and how fast they have been going.

Meanwhile, the introduction of IQ Routes technology by TomTom is listed among the activities helping the firm to record success over the first quarter of 2008. Within the figures given by the company as part of a recent financial update is year-on-year growth of 50 per cent in the portable navigation devices market, along with revenue increase both in the US and elsewhere. Further highlights indicated for TomTom include the launch of new TomTom Go GPS units in April and the announcement of its HD Traffic real-time road conditions reporting service across a number of European countries.

Wii owners offered 'a friend fur all seasons'

25 April 2008

The image of console gamers as spending their days in a darkened room could be in for an update, as Wii owners are being given the chance to create some new friends of their own design.

Build-A-Bear Workshop A Friend Fur All Seasons is due to make an appearance on the console, providing users with a virtual taste of the bear-making process which appears in the firm's high street stores.

A Nintendo DS version has already been introduced, but the company asserts that it wanted to give Wii fanatics the chance to get stuck into bear production too.

Henrik Mathiasen, president of software studio The Game Factory, says: "We're thrilled to extend our licensing agreement with Build-A-Bear Workshop to create a Wii game that the whole family can enjoy."

Build-A-Bear already gives its customers the opportunity to try the process without visiting one of its real-world stores thanks to a walkthrough of the entire bear production procedure on the company's website.

Memory enhancements 'now available'

25 April 2008

While many of the latest games for next-generation consoles seem to focus on brain training and memory enhancements, humans are not the only potential beneficiaries from increased memory capacity.

For those looking to upgrade their computers in a similar way, a number of new product launches could be of interest.

Super Talent Technology this week announced the availability of the world's first DDR3-1800 4 GB kit as part of its Project X range of "extreme performance" products.

The kit comprises two matching 2 GB modules, with a spokesperson asserting that competitors are able to reach maximum clock speeds of DDR3-1600.

Also new on the market is 667 MHz DDR2 SO-DIMM notebook memory from Kingston Technology.

The company claims this is also a first, allowing users of mobile computers to upgrade their existing systems without the need to replace them completely.

Kingston explains that the memory modules have been introduced under its HyperX brand in response to popular demand among its customers.

Kodak launches all-in-one printer

25 April 2008

Those who have been waiting for the perfect printer to be released might find a new model from Kodak meets their needs.

Kodak's ESP 5 All-in-One Printer is the newest product to be unveiled by the manufacturer and promises a range of functionality to suit home office needs.

Designed for both documents and photo printing, the unit takes two cartridges, one for black ink only and the other containing five pigmented colours.

Randy Brody, worldwide marketing director of inkjet systems, says: "Kodak is delivering on its promise to end ink profiteering and to bring people affordable, premium ink."

"We are focusing on delivering easy-to-use products that provide superb quality," he adds.

This comes alongside a commitment to providing efficiency of up to 50 per cent over the device's counterparts within the inkjet printer market.

Kodak recently reported it has made "substantial progress" as part of its efforts towards implementing sustainable business practices.
